To the E'Utor oj the Cromwell Abc.ck. Sik.~ As Secretary of the Bannockburn and i Garrick Range Miners’ Association, I cannot let i the remarks of Messrs Fmer, Smythies, ami ; others, at the meeting held in Cromwell on Thursday night, pass unnoticed. It being tl o • aluty of the Secretary of a new branch to notify : its formation to cither Associations, I may be ! considered blameworthy for not acquainting i Mr Smytliies w.th the fact of the formation of : th ; Bannockburn and Carrick Range Association. ; However, my reason fur not doing so was that I I (with numerous others) consider there never baa b en un il now a properly-formed Association jin Cromwell. The impression I have been under i is that what was done at the time of the Coufe* i rence at Tuapeka was merelv for the purpose of ! electing a delegate, and raising funds to pay his j expenses. I paid the subscription at that time ; an I voted, but never thought, until the occasion ; of the late meeting in Cromwell, that I belonged | to a Crom veil Miners’ Association, or that there I was any such Association in existence. Possi ]y [ there has been, hut if so surely a more useless ; b idy could not exist. Nearly four months have . elapse I since it was formed, and there has never ; licet) a meeting of members, nor a committee and ; olliceis elected—or else how comes it that these were elected on Thursday? Mr Fraer said he ; thought snne blame was attachable to certain members for starting a branch at the Bannock* i burn without in anyway consulting the Cromwell one, and that he thought the establishment of i he Bannockburn Association a decided, mistake. | As to toe lirst remark, seeing that it atfects my* : se.f, I can only reassert my ignorance of the i existence of such a body ; while, if it did exisL ! t has never done anything worthy of taking hj i pattern from, or anything to encourage adhesion ' -.o its members ’ list In regard to the formation : d our branch being a mistake, no one on this j side the Kawarau, at any rate, will agree with ! such an opinion, for it is altogether too far to : t' aval into Cromwell to a mating; indeed, no ion 3 .would do it Moreover, I ennsi ler there is j plenty of room for two Associations : let. (,'ro n- ' well have- say)-Bendigo, Q larU.Rcef Point, the Gorge, Lowburu, Jtc. ;’an I Jlaamockurn the Car* i kk Range, Nevis, and so forth, in their d strict, i 1 need say no more, except to wish the Cromwell ! Association every success. -I am, &c., John Fenwick. j March 25, IS7J. Sec. B. &O.U.M. A.
