QUEENSTOWN.

(From oar own Correspondent.) March 8, 1878. | The weather still continues line. Rain i has been daily expected, but, with the cxeep- i tiou of a slight shower on Thursday night, ; none has fallen. “ It’s an ill wind that blows nobody good,’’ and in this case the miners who are working the Bludov or river-bed are doing handsomely. One party netted some 700 ounces last month. A prospectus of another mining company (“ The Arrow River (Hold Mining Company") has been issued. I hear the shares are being taken up freely, as | the ground is known io be rich. Now that | companies are “all the go,” why not start one on a largo scale, to flume the Bhotover i river, and work the bed dry ? A capital of £40,000 or £50.000 would be sufficient. The i day is not far distant when this scheme will; | be floated, and those wlio know the river will I i agree that there is every prospect of a hand- ■ \ some return. Given the river in the United ' I Stales or California, and the tiling would be ■ i done whilst we are thinking about it. | Visitors still arrive by every steamer and ;coach. Apropos of this, a “ Tourists’ Ham- ; bonk to Lake Wakatip” is shortly to be pub , lishod here. Mr Richardson, the late town j ; clerk, is, 1 hear, the author, and the work is to | he printed and published by Mr Warren, of the • Lake iFal-ailp Mad, It is purposed to illusi trate the book with photographs. The want i of some guide has long been felt by visitors | to the Lake, so the venture is likely to prove a sum ss. Mr Malaghan, the Mayor, met with a serious accident last Saturday, whilst return- | ing from a Hospital meeting. He was in a, • buggy, }icooin]>anicd by Mr Ross, of the Bank ! of New Zealand, and two children, and whin nearing Queenstown the horse shied, and i precipitated the occupants down a slight bank, i Mr Malaghan sustained a compound fracture of the leg, but fortunately Mr Ross and the 1 children escaped unhurt. Mr Malaghan is • progressing favourably. The disagreement between the Town Clerk ' and the Council has been settled amicably, ; and Mr Boult has resumed bis duties. Mr Turner, tbc contractor, is pushing for- | ward the work at the new Shotover bridge, | and expects to have it completed in about four months.
