M'Crow, who murdered the wife of a fel-1 low-butcher with whom he lodged, and then j cut his own throat, has sufficiently recovered to be sent to gaol. He will be tried next week. A Select Committee has been appointed to enquire into telegraphic mismanagement regarding the transmission of Cable messages, a delay of 47 hours having occurred after being lodged in London. The chess contest between Queensland and Sydney terminated in favour of the latter. The Government will not award the Oalifornian mail contract until the Conference meets. Mr Hall, the pioneer of the service, is the lowest tenderer. He is backed by several of the leading merchants. The balance of the capital required is provided by the largest firm in the Indian trade. The A. S. N. Co.'s tender was several thousand pounds above Hall's. A terrific hurricane visited the Hunter district on Saturday. It unroofed houses and uprooted trees, while pieces of ice, some as large as oranges, fell. On the same day a | thunderstorm of unprecedented violence occurred in the Mudgee district, and did great damage to the crops. The remains of a misaing woman have been found near Mundooran. They showed that she had been murdered. Melbourne, January 2nd. Mr Francis, Chief Secretary, and Mr Lang ton, Colonial Treasurer, are to attend the Conference to be held in Sydney on the 13th tost. An attempted swindle by a well-known
ookmakor at the Croxton Park meeting is xciting considerable attention. The theatrical cricket match (in costume) told on the Melbourne ground, afl'orded much mnsement. Two brothers, named Smyth, school-mas-ers, have been drowned in Lake Colac by he upsetting of a boat. Mr Vogel and Mr Reynolds have arrived "it route for Sydney. The lectures delivered by Mr Peebles, the Spiritist, have been drawing large audiences. News to hand from Fiji, via Sydney, to December 14th. Mr Ireland, Meivber of Parliament for the Baa district, has resigned his seat at the request of his constituents, who have withdrawn themselves from all connection with the Government. They have published a statement that the Government is insolvent, and that the Treasury notes are almost worthless. Two Bau settlers, named Pfiuger and Landberg, were arrested by the Warden of the district for high treason, they having spoken against the Government. Pfluger was handcuffed, but Landberg jumped overboard, and was fired upon by the guard. This event has caused intense excitement. The whole Government machinery is considered a farce. Lieutenant Woods, the Premier, remains in Sydney, where he has been unable to obtain a loan for the Government. A Mrs Vernon, of Levuka, while going down to her house, had vitriol thrown over her. Her face escaped, but her chest was badly burned. A Line Islander in gaol quarrelled with the Fijian prisoners, and tried to brain them with a log of wood. Eventually he was shot dead by the warder. The schooner Kate Grant has been wrecked in Soomo Strait, Fiji. Mr Ross, builder, Levuka, who was a passenger by the Kate Grant, when at Drummond Island, Banks Group, was stabbed to death by a native on board the vessel.
