! Lato telegraphic intelligence from New i\ork contains the regretful announcement ; of tue death of Horace Greeley in that city on | November 30. For many years he has played I a prominent part in American polities, and he recently contested the Presidential eh*ejtion with General Grant. The following ! sketch of his career is given in “ Men of the Time” : —“ Horace Greeley was horn at Am- ; hurst, New Hampshire, in the Putted States, I feb. 4, 1811. About 1825—his parents having removed to Vermont—Horace, who had always oeeii a lover of books, obtained employment jis an apprentice in a printing-office, and in August, 1831, arrived at New York, where lie secured occasional work as a journeyman printer in various offices. In 1334, in partnership with .Messrs Winchester and Gibbetr, he started the A Ye- FoWNr, a weekly literary journal, which, alter several years’ trial proving unprofitable, was abandoned, and in 1841 lie commenced the pnldication of the Anr \ a/ /,' i r'lhn which has been very successful. In 1848, Mr Greeley was chosen to till a vacancy in the Thirtieth Congress, ami served through the short term preceding General Taylor’s inauguration. In 1851, he visited Europe, and was chosen chairman of one of the juries of _ the Great Exhibition, aim afterwards published an account of his f rat els. He is tue author of a collection of addresses, essays, Ac., published under the tide of ‘Hints toward Reforms.’ and of ‘ A History of the Struggle for Slavery Extension or Restriction in the Tinted States, from 1775 to 1 Bob’—published in 1850. In ISSIJ he visited California by way of Kansas and I tah. and delivered addresses in the principal low us through winch he passed. He advocated the cause of the 1 nion during the Civil War, and wrote ‘The American Conflict.’ published in 13(i4 and 18tj7.”
