DUNSTAN DISTRICT MINERS ASSOCIATION.
(Communicated.) A meeting of the Commiteeof the above body was held in the Clyde H)tel, on Saturday, the 2nd inst., to take int* consideration the matter contained in the crcular received from the Arrow Association, -s to having the district represented at the fothcoming meeting of delegates in Lawrence The greater portion of tie members were present.—The minutes of tie former meeting were read and coniirmed, aid the correspondence was dealt with. The Secretary (Mr J. Alxandor) said that, before the Committee finally appointed a delegate, it might be well that more strenuous efforts were made to <xtend the Associa tion -to a degree more in accordance with its name, so that it might eabrace the whole of the district in its operatims, as was originally intended. There was ai’eady a similar body at Alexandra ; and, he bated, the Committee had been endeavouring to induce Drybrcad, and its surrounding ostrict, either to join the Dunstan Associatin, or to form a local body. And there wfo the Cromwell and Bannockburn district, in which no steps had been taken to form associations. He would propose that the cooperation of the Alexandra Committee be invited in the endeavour i to get Committees fomed in those districts, j A Dunstan District Committee might then bo (formed, consisting of say) one or two niemi hers from each local Committee : such District Committee to h>ld quarterly meetings I at the head-quarters c; the local Committees i in rotation. These leal Committees might report their meetings to the Secretary appointed for the Disrict Committee, who would correspond, upn all matters of general importance, with the Government, and with the Central Con nittee proposed to be elected by the delegtes when they meet. It would be prematur at present to go into the discussion of cerbn rules that would require to be adopted. One point that should be carefully studied that both rules and objects of the Associaion should be such as
would tend to make the miners a united body To render the action of the proposed Central Committee less cumbersome and roundabout he thought it would be advisable to adopt this principle of federalisation of local com. mittees in all districts of the Province, and the District Committees themselves might also be federalised in connection with the proposed Central Committee. He was of opinion that one delegate from the whole of the Dunstan district would be sufficient, and that such delegate should Ire elected from among the members of the District Commit tee, and by that body. A general discussion ensued on the main proposition, and the Committee expressed themselves unanimously in favour of it. It was arranged that some of the member should attend the first meeting of the Alex, andra Committee, for the purpose of laying the matter before them ; and that others of the Committee should take steps to effect w'hat had been suggested as to the formation of local committees. It was also agreed that if possible, a meeting of the members elected by the different local bodies as a District Committee should meet at Clyde on Saturday, the 23rd inst., to appoint a delegate to proceed to Tuapeka. And it was further resolved that the Committee should meet at Clyde on the same evening, and, if they then found that their views regarding the representation of the district were not supported appoint a delegate from among themselves.
