MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.
I The meeting held on Thursday evening was attended by the Mayor and all the I Councillors. The Mayor reported having received an | answer by telegraph to the letter requesting the Government to allow the District Engi- | neer to furnish the Council with a report on jthe subject of water-supply. The GovernInient had acceded to the request, and the j Engineer would shortly furnish a report. I In reference to a letter received from Mr jColelough, asking to be put in undisputed j possession of the whole of the ground leased ;to him by the Corporation, the Town Clerk | was directed to write to Mr Goodger giving j him notice to remove a certain out-building | from the land referred to. On the motion of Cr. Grant, seconded by j Cr. Wright, the Standing Orders of the Lawrence Municipal Council were adopted, i-t, yhb'j, as the Standing d-ders of this Council. The appointment of the Permanent Comimittees was the next business before the 1 meeting. ; Cr. Marsh proposed tint Crs. Grant and | Dawkins, with the mover, should constitute j the Public Works Committee. This was seconded by Cr. Dawkins. The Mayor complained that his name was not included in the motion, as it would he !extremely inconvenient -besides bein» un- | usual—for the Mayor not to be a member of the committee. Cr. Grant thought it desirable that two Councillors, with the Mayo:-, should be appointed on each committee. He therefore I moved, as an amendment, that Crs. >vlarsh j and Dawkins, and his Worship the Mayor, ; form the Public Works Committee. Cr. Wright seconded the amendment. Cr. Marsh said the standing committees were merely appointed in order to inquire into and report on cert tin matters entrusted !to them by the Council. They possessed no | real power: everything thev did must be 1 ratified by the Council before being carried i into effect. j After some further discussion, the proposiI tions were put, and the amendment was cari ried by the casting vote of the Mayor. j Cr. Marsh: That'll just be the way all ; through the year. Cr. Grant proposed Cr. Wright, the mover, : and the Mayor as members of the Finance I Committee. The motion was seconded by Cr. Wright j and tacitly agreed to. j Cr. Dawkins moved the appointment of jthe Mavor, and Crs. Grant and Wright, as j members of Legislative and Rate Committee. | Seconded by Jr. Marsh and adopted. The Town Clerk was instructed to sue all j poisons wlnne rates or rents are in arrear. The Clerk was also directed to write and j request the Government to issue instructions for a survey of the reserve on the main street. Likewise, to communicate with the Secretary tor Public Works in re the proposed track to Quartz lleef Point ; and with the Colonial Secretary recommending the appointment of a public vaccinator for the district. The Council adopted a suggestion made by the Mayor as to initiating a requisition asking Mr Christopher Hickey, M. P.O. for this district, to resign his connection with tho Provincial Legislature.
