MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS
The nomination of candidates in the room of Councillors Brown and Dawkins (who retire by rotation), and of two gentlemen to act as Auditors of Corporation Accounts for the ensuing municipal year, took place in the Town-hall at noon on Saturday last. His Worship the Mayor presided. About a dozen ratepayers were present. The Town Clerk rea 1 the nominations received, which were as follow : FiR COUNCILLORS. Bridge Ward.- Mr .Jamus Dawk'NS, proposed by Mr W. 11. Whetler, seconded by Mr Thomas Heron. Kawarau Ward. —Mr David A. Jolly, proposed by Mr Robert Kidd, seconded by Mr Robert Brown.— Mr William Grant, proposed by Mr John Hayes, seconded by Mr Edward Lindsay. FOR AUDITORS. Mr Charles Colclouoh, and Mr J. A. Preshaw, proposed by Mr M. Fraer, and seconded by Mr J. Harding. Only one candidate being nominated for the representation of Bridge \\ ard, the Mayor declared Mr James Daw Kins duly (re-) elected as Councillor for the ensuing two years. Two cvudidates being nominated for Kawarau War I, the May ir announced that a poll to decile the election would be taken on Thursday next, the Ist of August. Messrs Colchmgh and Preshaw were declared duly ecu ted as Corporation Auditors for the ensuing municipal year. The Mayor then adjourned aU further proceedings until the pol iug-day. Mr Grant luiedy adlressid the ratepayers present. He said that in appearing before them as a can li late for the representatmn of Kawarau Ward, he felt that his return was comparatively scene. His antecedents during a long rest leu e in Cromwell were we I known to most of the ratepayers; ail if they consi lare.l him qualified to represent their interests in the Council ho trusted they would vote for him in preference to the other candidate. He could not help remarking lhat the opposition to h : s candidateiv camc from a quarter whence he had least ox pec.ed it. He he'd a hvger stake in Kawarau Ward, and had been longer resident in it, than Mr Jolly. Mr Jolly s property was nearly all in Bridge Ward; and although he dept in Kawarau Ward, the ratepayers did mt wait sleep ng representatives. It seemed to him that if Mr Jolly were elected, the pe <ple of Bridge Ward would lie like the three tailors of Tooleystreeb, who styled themselves “the people of England for Bridge Ward, and Bridge Wml only, would then be represented. Air Jolly was n it present at the nomhnthn, but he (Mr Grant) would he happy to meet the ratepayers, along with that gentleman, at any convenient tim before the eectioa in order that they if pit hare an opportunity of hearing the cauoi hates’ views on the important question of water-supply, and on other matters auectiog the town and district generally. Before sitting d iwn, kiwi bed, as a matter of justice to ,\ir Taylor, to say that although he (Mr Grant) and others had spoken very strongly upon the water-question, during the Mayor d election, they had carefully avoided expressing any decided opinion on the matter. .Mr Taylor’s scheme had been condemned as unsuitable to the re piirements of the town, bat lie felt hound to say a mo e practicable plan had not yet been prunulgatel. He believed that the town water-supply, to be oftenive. would have to lie hr m o h iron Firewoul Creek; Ini at present there seemed to exist consi lerabhdoubt as to the practicability of that scheme. With a vote of tlx inks to the Mayor, prop ised by Mr Fraer and seconded by Mr Grant the meeting dispersed.
