“JUDEX” ON THE CROMWELL CUP.

To the Editor of the Cromwell A rgus. Mr. Editor, —Having taken a trip to this Colony for the benefit of my health, on landing at the Port I was immediately informed of the Great Municipal Meeting at Cromwell. So lat once made for the scene of action ; and having visited the various stables, and seen every horse that is expected to run for the big event taking exercise, I will give you my opinion of the various nags, a* they now stand. The first I saw out was Woodman, a very smooth goer, and [ am informed the winner of the Cup last year. I can't say I fancied him much, even with last last year's win for a recommendation. He went strong for the first quarter, but died away to nothiu" before he had done half ttie distance. His trainer, Whippey, and the head-groom, Bookey, say they can't get him to look at Pure Water ; the dirtier the water the better he likes it. He has been a very expensive horse for the Company ; bis last attempt cost them 10 sovs. The next I saw was that well-known old horse, Lapstoue. Poor oil fellow ! they might let him spell for the rem linder of his days, as I feel sure he will break down if ever they start him. The other certain starter is Mickey Free, a colt by Brunswick out of Seal. This colt gives great promise of pulling it off; in fact, his trainer considers the race as good as won; an opinion in which, bar accident, I thoroughly coincide. I cm. therefore, without any hesitation, place them thus : Mickey Free, 1 ; Woodman, 2. Should any change take place in the market, I'll let you know. Judex.
