WARDEN'S REPORT.

jjf E. H. Carew, Warden for the Dunstan ijstrict, writing to the Provincial Secretary )r Gold fields, reports : I have the honour to forward herewith jtisiieal returns for the Dunstan district, j in which I have included Blacks, for the tarter ending on the 31st March last. r r e*ret that the short time I have had the iuporary charge of the district has not jeed me in a position to report fully of its ■ogress. The season passed through has >e n one of extreme dryness, and consejently unfavourable for the production of. ,ld; in fact, a large number of miners have >en' forced from want of water to remain le at their claims. This applies also to isrtz-mining, for at Bendigo the crushing jehines have been stopped ; and those at ie Carrick Ranges have worked to great disIvantage from a short supply. The cutting the Carrick Water Supply Co.'s race is miiuenced, and when completed will be able i supply the machines on the Carrick, as e lla 3 the alluvial workings. Other enter•ises for water supply are also mooted, nobly the construction of a new race to carry 10 water-right of the old G olden Gate Commy whose race was constructed to Black's. lii present proprietors consider there is a •ospect of putting the water to more profit,[e use along the slopes of the Dunstan mere, and have applied for the necessary itbority to make the alteration. The length the proposed race is over twenty miles, id the water is to be used upon known auferous ground along its course, and then to be picked up, and t > be kept suffieatly high' to allow of it being conducted to here it will command the banks of the jlyneux below Clyde. Some of the quartzining companies in the district have been tying good dividends, and this branch of inwg appears only t > require the introduc-o-jaf capital to extend in importance. The Chinese population is increasing, espeilly in the neighbourhood of Alexandra, here they have taken up old ground abanjnedyear3 ago, and the result seems to sassy them, and evidently to improve busies? in Alexandra. The Escort has conveyed, the following untitles of gold to Dunedin during the nrter: —From Cromwell, 57480z5. 4dvts.; oil Clyda, 212.) ozs. ISdwts. ; Alexandra, liioxs. Gdwts. ; Blacks, 2200 ozs. ; in all, 1,532 ozs. G dwts."
