An Opposition, xihderthe leadership of Mr shepherd, ha 3 been formed, consisting almost ntirely of Gold-fields members. At a meetna which was held on Saturday, it was reofved to endeavour to oust the Government. Mr St. John Branigan, who has been for ome time in Dunedin Lunatic Asylum, on Saturday evening had a paralytic stroke, by rhich he has lost the use of his right Side. The violent ringing of the two fire-bells at half-past three on Monday morning turned )30 ple out of their beds by the hundred. A ire had broken out in the Club Hotel, in laclaggan-street, but it was fortunately got nder without doing much damage. Jjfr Smythies' case was partly heard in the \nirt of Appeal at Wellington on Saturday.
WELLINGTON, Tuesday, 10 a.m. Smvtliies' case has been on for two days in he Court of Appeal, and will be finished o-morrow. The Attorney-General, Travers, nd Howorth oppose the case.
