MUNICIPAL ELECTION.
KAWAftAU WARD. The ''Doll for the election of a Councillor for ! Kawarau Waul (m the room of Mr Shanty) was ! taken at the Cromwell Hotel on Thursday last. It was anticipated from the outset that the contest between Messrs Marsh and Hayes would be a close one, and the result proved the correctness cf that anticipation. Neither of the candidates had given any exposition of bis viows on municipal questions, and the choice of the ratepayers was made on purely pergonal grounds. Shortly after four p.m. the ba'lot-box was conveyed from the poll ing-place t' > the To n u-bn 1 !, and its contents baW ig been e\v.irno I by the Mayor, Presiding Offieer, and Scrutineers, Irs Worship appeared at the front enhance of the hall and announced the result ot the poll to be as follows : John Marsh 22 John Hayes 19 There being a majority of three in favour of the first-mentioned candidate, he, (the Mayor) declared Mr Marsh duly elected as Councilor for Kawarau Ward. Mr Marsh expressed his thanks to the ratepayers for having given them such a gratifying proof of their confidence, and trusted they would have no reason to regret their choice. So far as hortesty of intention was concerned, ho was quite sure the citizens would not find him wanting ia that qualification. (Cheers.) Mr Haves said he felt very grateful to those citizens who bad voted for him on the present occasion. Had he been electcfl, he would have done his best for the interests of the town. (Applause.) Ho hoped, however, they had returned a better man, and he thought they had done so. On the motion of Mr Nave:, a vote of thanks to the Mayor was carried by acclamation, and was briefly acknowledged by lih Worship.
