GARRICK RANGE QUARTZ REEFS.
——o I pi The supply of water for machine purposes Bi lias again run very short, and there can be I" no doubt that much gold is lost in crushing l x through the unavoidable use of dirty water on the tables. ( j l A new reef situate at the head of Paddy’s se Gully, was recently taken up by a party wl chiefly composed of shareholders in the United Bannockburn Company. We are not in possession of any reliable particulars regarding 0 £ the new discovery. co Yale of Avooa. —The test-crushing from iu this claim was finished at the Standard bat- m tery last Tuesday. The result, we are in- wi formed, was 10 ozs. 10 dwts. from 20 tons of th stone, —an average of 10| dwts. per ton. in Rob RoY.—A small lot of 12 tons from ar this claim was crushed at the Standard Bat- ve tery last week, with the satisfactory result of co 7 ozs. 11 dwts. 3 grs. The manager (Mr John Bruce) informs us that a quantity of ac slate rock, estimated at five tons, was sent w down to the battery and crushed along with hi the quartz, so that the actual quantity of tli gold-bearing stone operated upon was not re more than seven tons. The stuff was taken las from a drive on, the fifty-foot level, in which | w are numerous small leaders, varying from | tl: three inches to two feet wide, and intermixed i tr with the rock which formed the casing. The Itc nature of the ground rendered it a matter of i b; | difficulty to separate this quartz from the I w ! circumjacent rock, and to save time and |tl I trouble, the material for the trial crushing m was milled just as it came from the mine, di We have been shown some excellent sped- H mens from the extremity of the drive above ' w mentioned ; and judging from the appearance j al of the stone and the result of the trial-crush-! ni ing, there seems every probability that the w claim will give an average yield of an ounce to the ton. The manager intends carrying oi the shaft down other 15 or 20 feet, and then a driving for the reef at the lower level. hj Colleen Bawn. —This claim, situate above 11 the Rob Roy, close to Hancock’s dam, is ai showing signs of renewed vitality. We hear a that a good reef was struck in the shaft on 81 Saturday last, but not having been cut 11 through, its thickness cannot yet bo ascer- | tamed. A good prospect, however, has been B Washed out. 81 | Star of the East. —There is now an al- P i most unlimited quantity of stone in view, 11 1 and the prospects of the Company are brighter '' ■ than ever. Under the able management of (l iMr S. Williams, the mine is getting into 11 ; first-rate working condition. The reef lately ' struck in the upper level was found to have 11 i jumped 10 feet eastward from where it was e I formerly lost sight of. The store in this part of the claim is from three to four feet thick. |A crushing of 100 tons at the Star-and-Oak 1 Battery was finished on Saturday, the result : being 184 ozs. 10 dwts. 14 grs. ; average, per j s [ ton, 1 oz. 3 dwts 1 gr. A dividend of £SO per j 0 I full share of 200 scrip has since been made ‘ j 1 I payable, and a fair proportion of the profits : j is reserved for contingencies. 11 Green’s Claim, Adams’s Gully.—A secorn! crushing from this reef is now going | 0 through at the Standard Battery. ; j The Pipeclay Reefs.— The John Bull p and Nil Desperandum are busily engaged e grassing stone. The latter company and the , p Robert Burns are both sinking permanent p shafts. Tiie Golden Gate tunnel is in about v 100 feet, and we learn that a change in the q appearance of the ground, indicating the \ ;l proximity of a reef, is observable at the ex- j s tremity of the drive. i *■ Elizabeth. —This company’s battery is 1 s now crushing at the rate of about 50 tons a ! J week. New stamp-heads are urgently re- 11 quired, and when supplied, a few more tons ! s weekly may be got through. i \
