*&- PER CREMLE'S TELECRAM COMPANY, REUTER'S ACEHTS. ■ DUNEDIN, Tuesday, 9 a.m. In the Supreme Court yesterday, the case of Reicheldt v. the New Zealand Insurance Company, was decided in favour of plaintiff. The jury, after a retirement of 25 minutes' duration, returned into Court and awarded to Reicheldt the full amount of insurance claimed—L.looo. The cases against other insurance companies will be decided by this one, which has occupied the Court since yesterday week. Mr Macandrew, Mr Rolleston, and party reached the Bluff by steamer yesterday. Up to the present time, two-thirds of the Volunteers in Otago have competed in order to qualify themselves as representatives in the colonial competition firing. Lieutenant Goldie, ex-champion, and Ensign M'Gregor, a former representative, failed to score the requisite number of points in the first stage. Mr Macassey will contest the Assembly election for the Wakatip district. Mr E. ff. Ward, registrar of the Supreme Court, had a narrow escape from drowning on Saturday, his horse having fallen while crossing the railway embankment at Pelichet Bay. The continued drought is severely felt in Canterbury and Auckland. The strike of the workmen on the Waikato railway line still continues. Two thousand three hundred people were | present at the Tuapeka Races on the second j day (Friday). THE SUEZ MAIL. The Rangitoto arrived at Hokitika with the Suez Mail on Sunday. LATEST TELEGRAPHIC FROM LONDON*. On the 20th the Prince was progressing favourably. 21st. —Passed a restless night. 24th.—Progressing favourably. (On arriving off Glenelg, the mail steamer signalled that the Prince was dead, but there was no confirmation of the announcement in the telegrams.) The Tichbornc case was adjourned till the 18th January. The claimant's case reached the seventieth day. Arthur Orton was not produced. Australian tinned meats are increasing in public favour rapidly. The captain and officers of the troop-ship Magoera were acquitted, and were complimented on the fidelity and bravery displayed by them under the peculiar circumstances attending the loss of the vessel. The Prince of Wales's groom died on the 18th December, of typhoid fever. It is proposed to send out an expedition to rescue Dr Livingston. A great fire has occurred at Rotherhithe, destroying L.300,000 worth of property, in addition to 70,000 quarters of wheat. Kelly's acquittal (of the murder of a policeman in Glasgow) caused great dissatisfaction in England. The Russian Press has entirely changed its tone towards Germany, and recommends a union of the slave races under Russia. The Orleans princes have been allowed to sit in the French Assembly. The prospects of the Republic are improving. Thiers is proclaimed President for life. Rossel, Ferre, and Bourgois, leading Communists, have been executed. Over 70,000 bales of wool were sold at the late sales. The attendance of buyers was large, and competition brisk. At the commencement of the sales, September prices were fully sustained. Australian and New Zealand wools realised Id. to l\d. higher. 1500 bales of flax were offered, and all sold at 30s. advance. Large parcels are in second hands for shipment to America. New Zealand Securities.—Six Per Cents., 110 to 112 ; ditto, Consolidated, 111 to 114. The Australian news is unimportant. The Sydney Chamber of Commerce have petitioned the Government of New South Wales to subsidise Webb's line in preference to Hall's. L.00,000 of the New Zealand Loan has i been placed at 102.
