MOUNT IDA RACES.

—o — annual race meeting of the Mount Ida Jockey Club took place on Wednesday and Thursday last, the 10th and 11th inst. "The first day" (says the Chronicle) " was one eminently suited for such a purpose, being clear, bright, and without wind. Still, as humanity must and will grumble and find fault with something, we shall perhaps bo excused if we say that, in our opinion, the weather was rather too would be the better and more appropriate term. Mr Main's br g Maniototo, 3 yrs, 7st 3lbs - 1 Mr Schluter's b g Honest John, aged, lOst lib 2 Mr Schluter's br c Saladin, 4 yrs, 9st 21b - 3 Spey, Minx, Bounce, and Young Turpin also started. The run home was an exciting one, Maniototo winning by about a length and a half. Grand Stand Handicap, of 100 sovs. Distance, two miles. Mr Walters' b m Yatterina, 6 yrs, Bst 101b • 1 Mr Prince's ch g Sir Tatton, aged, Bst - - 2 Mr Douglas' ch g Exile, 5 yrs, Bst 71b - - 3 Mr Studholme's ch f Flying Fish, 3 yrs, 6st 41b . - - - - . - - - 0 Mr Robinson' 3 blk g Backbiter, aged, 9st * 0 The moment the flag fell Sir Tatton dashed off with a good lead, and maintained his position until approaching the judge's box, when Exile challenged him, and they both passed neck and neck, with Yatterina lying closely behind. In the run home the Auckland mare proved too much for her opponents, and came in an easy winner by several lengths. Backbiter and Fly- , ing Fish, on the second round, both gave up the ! race. Mount Ida Cur, of 75 Distance, one mile an I a half. Weight for age. Mr Walters' b m Slander, aged - - - 1 Mr Studholme's ch hj Knottingley, aged - 2 Knottingley took the lead, with Slander in close attendance. When passing the grand stand the mare was slightly in advance uf the old horse. She gradually improved her position, and carried off the Cup in a canter, hands down, Knottiugly making no effort in the straight run. Selling Race, of 30 sovs. Distance, one mile. Mr Grant's Comet 1 Mr Packman's Bounce 2 Air M'Kay's Miss Alice - - Q Bounce jumped off with the lead, with Mis i Alice a close second. No change occurred in thi3 order till half-way round, when Comet drew up to the front, and caaie in an easy winner by several lengths. Hack Race of 29 sovs. Distance, one mile. Mr Schluter's Saladin 1 Mr Prince's Kildare . 2 Six horses started—namely, Pillbox, tfamil* ton, Kildare, Saladin, Jenny, and Spider. The lead was taken by Pillbox, who kept it well for some time, but was ultimately overtaken by Saladin, who came in a winner, with Kildare second. SECOND DAY. This day was all that could be desired for outdoor sports, and though warm, was neither so much nor oppressively so as on the previous day. Hurdle Race, of 40 sovs. One mile heats, over four flights of hurdles. Welter weight i for age. Mr Schluter's b g Honest John, aged - * 1 Mr Prince's ch g Sir Tatton, aged - - 2 Honest John led from the start, took all his hurdles in fine style, and won in a canter by ten lengths—Sir Tatton pulling Up very lame. Sir Tatton was scratched, and Honest John walke 1 over, for the second heat. Mount Ida Handicap of 75 sov3. Distance, a mile and a half. Mr Robinson's Backbiter, aged, Bst - - 1 Mr Studholme's Knottingley, atjed. 9st 71b - 2 Mr Walters' Yatterina, 6 yrs, Bst 121bs - 3 Mr Douglas' Exile, 5 yrs, Bst 101b - - 0 Mr Prince's Kildare, aged, 6st 71b - - 0 After a false start they got well away, with Knottingley in the front, Backbiter lying a close second. Yatterina soon took a third position. Th's order was maintained till near the straight running, when Backbiter challenged Knottingley, headed him, and won easily by four lengths. Free Handicap of 50 sovs. Distance, a mile and a half. Mr Robinson's Backbiter, Bst - - • 1 Mr Douglas' Malabar, 7st - - * - 2 Maniototo, 6st 101b 3 Comet and Lyndon also ran. Backbiter came in an easy winner by about two lengths. Consolation Handicap of 25 sovs. Distance, one mile. Mr Schluter's Saladin, 7st - - - - 1 Mr Douglas' Malabar, 7st 121b - - 2 Mr Studholme's Flying Fish, 7st 71b3 - - 3 Lyndon and Miss Alice also ran. Saladin won by a length ; Malabar second, and Flying Fish a good third. Selling Race, £2O. No weight under Bst 71bs. Distance, three-quarters of a mile.—(Seven entries). Pillbox 1 Bobby 2 The race was closely contested. Pillbox, the I winner, was afterwards put up by auction at ! £lO, and realised £27 10s.
