QUEENSTOWN.
—()— (From our own Currexpviirfeid. j January (>. i During tho past few weeks we have been i a little more lively than usual. The first event worthy of notice was a concert given at the Shotover a few days before Christmas, in aid of the local school. The i performers, vocal and instrumental, acquitted themselves excellently, and the best concert given for some months was listened to by a lwgo and appreciative audience, the results j being considerably over £2O. Next came the cricket match against the j Arrowites, which was plaved at Arrowtown,, and, I am sorry to say, resulted in our eleven being defeated, with live Arrow wickets to : fall. The return match was played here on New Year's Day, and <>n this occasion the ] tables wen; completely turned, the Qucenstonians beating the Arrowites in one inning.-; with six. runs to spare. Chr stmas and Boxing Days passed off very tamely, chiefly owing to the petty jealousies of our publicans preventing any sports being organised. The e< msequence was that scarcely j a miner appeared in our streets, nine-tenths ; of those who would otherwise have come go- j i'ng to Arrowtown, where three days'sports o t'ercd an irresistible attraction. The Church of England Bazaar, which was . held on Boxing-dly and the two following; days, proved a great success, notwithstanding the empty appearance of tho town. I understand the grosa or meeds wore nearly £240, | close upon £IOO being the reeei])ta at one [ stall, —that presided over by Mosdames; Archer, Atkins, LI >s : irugo, and Sutherland,; who deserve every credit for their unwearied . exertions. On the evening <<~ New Year's Day, the Amateur Dramatic Company gave a perforin moo in the Theatre, the house being well j filled. The piece* wore varied by some ex- ! celient singing and dancing by some Dunedin I visitors. i The races on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday next naturally engage a huge amount of j attention at present. Visitor? need not fear j a laek of amusements during tho raeo days, j On the Ist and 2nd days, a cmrevt and dr.v i initio perform an-"* 1 are io be giv r -n in aid of
ho Brass Band, which will appear for the first time ; and balls will be given at all the principal hotels. On the last night, Mr Richardson's art union of paintings and phot graphs of Lake scenery will be drawn at Bichardt's Commercial Hall. The election of a member for this district j in the House of Representatives (in place of Mr Haughton, resigned,) will cause some little stir. It i 3 understood that Mr Bendix j Hallenstein (our worthy Mayor) has consented to stand : and should he do so, he will no doubt have a walk over. The seat in the Provincial Council will probably bo contested I by Messrs Malaghan, Barton, and Manders. I By-the-bye, the member for the Dunstan has returned to honour us with his presence. I fear mining agency will be scarcely so brisk j as it was before his departure, now that we have two lawyers in the place.
