DUNEDIN, Tuesday, 10.40 a.m. Kereopa will be executed on Friday. He confesses his complicity in the murder of Mr Volkner. The natives generally admit the justness of the sentence. The Caledonian Gathering yesterday was a great success, there being a greater number of people at it than at any preceding one. The Criminal Session of the Supreme Court is just opened. The Judge's charge referred to the increase of crime. Mr Reeves, member for Selwyn, in replying to the toast of " The Assembly," at Ellesmere, said that the General Government intended introducing 8000 immigrants during 1872, and that this number, supplemented by those which will be introduced by Mr Brogden and Colonel Fielding, will increase the number to 10,000. The Government are anxious to promote agriculture, and have had under consideration the advisability of appointing a Board of Agriculture. Captain Hutton is deputed by the General Government to report on the coal mines of Otago.
