DUNSTAN JOCKEY CLUB RACES.

■ • —o— ... t The annual raee-meeting under the auspices of the above Club took place on Tues- v -, -I ITT. i _J„„ J.K-' O'll.'U ..~,1 OTfU T»~ day and *»uuueou.:*y, cub torn anci liiEi/u- ■ cember. Although a month earlier in the season than usual, this circumstance must be I rather favourable than other- * wise to the general success of the meeting : j partly owing to the fact that all the principal ; up-country rasing fixtures come off either in I the latter end of December'or the early part of January ; but mainly because during the « Christmas week there is an almost entire ces- - nation of mining operations throughout the ' gold-fields, and that period is therefore the ' most auspicious for securing large gatherings of people in those parfc3 of the district where public amusements do most abound. The weather at the Dunstan on Tuesday was a trifle gusty, but not disagreeably so ; yet, strange to say, the number of spectators on the Course on that day did not exceed the average attendance at the Dunstan or Crom well Spring Meetings. On Wednesday, the number was if anything less, although it must be said that the exceedingly unpleasant state of the weather on that day was sufficient to clamp the ardour of the most enthusiastic sportsman. We subjoin the results of the racing. For those of the first day we are indebted to our Clyde contemporary : Maiden Plate of £s'). Distance, U, mile. Weight for age. After a fair start, the horses cleared the first jump simultaneously, and the big bay then drew three or four lengths ahead, maintaining his position for three quarters of a mile, when Dan O'Brien put on speed and came up with him. The race from this time was splendidly contested, neither horse making any demur at the timber.
