representatives to unite and work hand in hand on any one single question. The want of unanimity invariably displayed by them has become quite a bye-word in the House; and the consequence is that every important question affecting Otago that comes on for discussion is left to the tender mercies of honourables who probably know little (and care less) about it, and who are utterly unable to judge of its particular phases from the contlicting and <iia* metrically opposite statements of the members whose duty it is to endeavoucj: direct the deliberations of the House so that a proper result may be arrived at. miners of this Province certainly qwfiMessrs Murray and Reynolds a their narrow-minded opposition to portant industry, and they richly a warm reception on their return fronfflffll? Five waggons, loaded with Chinamen and their goods and chattels, arrived in Cromwell on Saturday afternoon. A considerable number of the “ heathens” have located themselves in the neighbourhood of the Rannockbiirn, and the remainder continued their journey into the interior. We arc reliably informed that this steady stream of immigration from the Land of Flowers may lie expected to continue for many months to come. The cause is easily explained : one of their countrymen lately went home, after only fifteen months’ sojourn in this Province, with L. 1300, a sum which in China constitutes a colossal fortune ; and about the same time several others returned hence to the land of their nativity with sums varying from L.200 to L.500 each.

The value of the nugget was £67, and the surplus received from sale of tickets over that amount went t. p the funds of the Dunstan Hospital. The Committee of the Dunstan Hospital have resolved to dispense with the services of Dr Burrows as llosident Surgeon, and have given that gentleman notice that his engagement will terminate at the expiration of three months from a date specified. The Legislative Council, on the 28th, appointed a select Committee to enquire into the sale, hy the Otago Government, of 50,000 acres of land at Moa Flat to Mr W. J. T. Clarke. Mr Gisborne’s reply to the question put by Mr Shepherd “Whether the Government will take steps to provide for the better administration of justice in the Province of Otago, hy causing the erection of a court-house and gaol,
and a periodical sitting of the Supreme Court in the Dunstan district ?”—was, that a Supreme Court sitting could not he held in the Dunstan district until some provision had been made for a court-house and gaol. The Provincial Government had not been in a position to provide that accommodation, and it was not the intention of the Government to put on the Estimates this session any sum for the erection of a gaol in the Dunstan. Whether they would he able to do so in any future session was, of course, a question ho could not at present speak definitely upon.
