CROMWELL SPRING- RACES.
Tuesday, s-m September. Up till noon on Tuesday tho weather continued fine, giving promise of an enjoyable meeting on the Cromwell Course. Between twelve and one o’clock, however, the western sky became suddenly overcast, and in a very short space of time the wind rose to a gale, accompanied by a heavy fall of snow. This lasted for three hours, when the snow-storm abated; and though slight snow-showers fellat inteiwals during the afternoon, and the wind was bitterly cold, there was nothing to necessitate the postponement of the racing till another day. The number of spectators on the course was fully up to the usual average, notwithstanding the fact that many ladies and children were prevented by the severity of the weather from being present.
The Stewards —Messrs Co mm, Loaghuan, Shanly, Jolly, and Taylor—porfonnod their onerous duties to the complete satisfaction of all concerned, —and of this fact no better proof could be adduced than that there were no disputes. Mr Kidd’s name was on tmT list of Stewards, bat that gentleman, owing; to indisposition, was unable to be presepj;. Mr J. Harding officiated as Judge; Mr Dawkins as Starter; and Mr Pierce usual, vigilant and indefatigable as the Course. The duties of Secretary, vr«r,o efficiently performed by Mr W. M.icnab.
The Grand Stand and Refreshment Booth were under the management of Mr HardUig, of the Junction Commercial Hotel.; andithe arrangements made for the comfort of visitors were—considering the disagreeable state! af the weather—all that could bo desired, -a 04
