ALEXANDRA.

(Prom our own. Correspondent ) August 22. A public meeting of those interested in the Library and Heading-room was held last Monday evening, in the Library-room. The attendance was numerous. Mr J. C. Chappie (the Mayor) was called to the chair, and explained the object of the meeting, urging the necessity of maintaining the efficiency of so valuable an institution as the Public Library. Mr Beresford, the late Treasurer, then gave a statement of accounts, which showed that the balance in hand amounted to about £l(s. It was also stated that the annual subscriptions were nearly all duo. The Treasurer’s report having been received, the meeting proceeded to elect a new committee, when the following gentlemen were chosen, viz.:— Mr J. C. Chappie, president; Mr Geo. Ratclitte, treasurer ; Mr Rivers, hon. secretary ; and Messrs Finlay, Beresford, Robertson, and Theyers, members of committee. Mr A. Jack was appointed to act as librarian. Some other resolutions of an unimportant nature having been passed, the usual vote of thanks was accorded to the Chairman, and the meeting closed. A meeting of Committee was held immediately afterwards, when it was resolved to communicate with Mr George Robertson, of Melbourne, in reference to obtaining a fresh supply of books. It was further arranged that the reading-room should in future be kept open in the daytime, and also on mailnights.
