RECOMMENDATION TO APPOINT A WARDEN FOR CROMWELL.
DUNEDIN. Tuesday, 1.45 p.m. A man named Craigie, one of the crew of the lighter Victoria, was knocked overboard in the Upper Harbour on Saturday by some tarpaulin, and drowned. His body has not been recovered yet. The Dock dispute lias culminated in tlxe Trust deciding on taking possession, and obtaining Blackett’s opinion as to the cause of the leak.
The Omeo arrived at Hokitika on Sunday, with the Suez Mail. The mails remain untendered, owing to the high sea.
There was a sudden fall in the value of mining stock at Auckland on the sth. A panic in Caledonians caused their decline to £l6O. The small holders were alarmed in consequence of the small quantity of specimens taken out during the week. It is generail believed that the dividends for a couple of weeks will be small, but that they will
increase again immediately. Earl Behnore, Governor of New South Wales, is on a visit to the Thames. The report that Ropata had joined Te Kooti is not believed. The Gold-fields Administration Committee suggest that the police receive applications for Miners’ Rights, Business Licenses, Ac., where there is no Magistrate. They say it is unnecessary to create a new Warden’s District with the head quarters at Blacks, but that the growing importance of Cromwell demands the appointment of an officer to take charge and act as Warden and Gold Receiver. They suggest that the officer proposed to be sent to Blacks should be sent to Cromwell instead. They also report against the recommendation of the Mining Conference to remove the Wardens periodically, and the employment of the police as bailiffs. The Land Bill progresses slowly. There is considerable opposition to the proposal to increase the price of land to 30s per acre. The Government defend the increase on the ground of necessity.
