RECOMMENDATION TO APPOINT A WARDEN FOR CROMWELL.

DUNEDIN. Tuesday, 1.45 p.m. A man named Craigie, one of the crew of the lighter Victoria, was knocked overboard in the Upper Harbour on Saturday by some tarpaulin, and drowned. They suggest that the officer proposed to be sent to Blacks should be sent to Cromwell instead. They also report against the recommendation of the Mining Conference to remove the Wardens periodically, and the employment of the police as bailiffs. The Land Bill progresses slowly. There is considerable opposition to the proposal to increase the price of land to 30s per acre. The Government defend the increase on the ground of necessity.
