Large numbers of “ have lately been in Cromwell, on t ncjv way to various alluvial diggings, 'i'he “ new], churn” Chinaman is ns nnmistakeablo as his European prototype. The number of Chinese returned in December, ISG7, was 1185. The increase during the three years is 1392, —the census total being 2577. As upwards of 300 Chinese have recently arrived in Otago (since the census was taken) direct from Hong Kong, the number now in the Province is about 3000. It is wonderful how Mr Shepherd, continues to exist under such nn increasing Mongolian load.
