MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly ruseting of the Council was hell in the 'LV.vn-hill 0:1 Mm lay evening last. The Mayor an 1 all the Councillors were present. The minutes of the previous regular meeting, and those of a special injeting held on the evening of Friitay, the 9th inst., were read and confirmed. Amplications from Mess-s Barr, Brown, and Kelly for leases of municipal sections were read, and, on the motion of Or. D igg, seconded by Cr. Whetter, were received for consideration. For keeping th j race in repair and the streetchannels clear, three tenders were rsa 1 : viz., Samuel Brooks, £1 per week; Christopher Thomas, 15s ; and James A. Hurley, 143. The last-mentioned tender was accepted. The account of Mr James Taylor (£3 12s) was passed for payment ; .and the Town Clerk was instructed to write to Mr Warren, of Qaeenstown, in reference to a disputed item in his account. A letter was read from the Tuapeka Progress Committee, asking the co-operation of the Cromwell Council in procuring a continuation of the Clutha railway from Tokomairiro to Tuapeka, and also in procuring a portion of the Four Million Loan for the supply of water to the Ota'o Gold-Sells.—The receipt of the letter was ordered to be ackuowle Iged. A letter, signed hv twenty-one residents, was handed in, asking that the Council would do something towards the formation of Murraystreet. The Mayor thought it would be better to leave the matter over until the Council had sudieient funds to do the work properly ; and the Town Clerk wV? instructed to reply to the effect that the matter would receive the attention of the Council when the Government subsidy was received. The Town Clerk was instructed to request the auditors to au lit the books for the past yea" ; and, when that has been done, to write to the Government for the subaidv. On )«* motion of Cr. Whetter, seconded by Cr. the Town Clerk was instructed to draw up a me norial to the Government, requesting the immediate erection of the new Courthouse, and showing the advisability of the gaol fo; the Dunstan district being erected at Crom-. well. It was resolved on the rmtion of Cr. Brown, seconded by Cr. Dawkins. "That the Town Clerk be instructed to write to the Government, and request thorn to erect the new Courthouse on part of section 1, block vii., being municipal reserve, situated alongside the. Council Chamber ; and to state that, the Council would exfehange the proposed site for the site, of the present Court-house (section 3, Mock iii.,)" Tne Clork v/ao also instructed to'.write to the

The Clerk was instructed to write to the Provincial Secretary, asking him if the bye-laws sent to the Provincial Council two or three sessions.ago are still in the possession of the Government, and if so, requesting that they may be brought before the special meeting of the Council, which is to be held three weeks hence.
