Mr W. Eraser, M.P.O. for Dunstan district, is announced to address the electors at he Town-hall to-night, at eight o'clock. Tho Provincial Engineer, G. M. Barr, Zaq., arrived from Dnnedin yesterday. He is locompanied l)y Mr Pierce, tho newly-appointed [toad Engineer for the interior District. We ire informed that they intend proceeding on to Jueenstown to-day.

[ It affords us great pleasure to state that a Quadrille Club has been organised in Cromwell, the movement has been taken up with spirit by a number of respectable residents, fie Clnb meets for practice every Friday evening, at Kidd's Concert Hall. Since our last issue, nothing further has {transpired that is likely to lead to the recovery « the treasure stolen from the Clyde Police Camp on the Ist inst. Large rewards, amounting altogether to £2250, are offered by the Government and the Banks for the conviction of the offenders and the recovery of the gold ; and a numerous body of police is employed in scouring the country in the neighbourhood of Clyde. We sincerely hope their exertions w 111 prove successful.

i Dv Carr gave two entertainments at jKidd's Hall last week—on both occasions to ftcod houses. The attractions presented con- ■ jsted of a very excellent lecture on " Human :'I .>ve," and a series of practical illustrations of Srbc power of mesmerism. The Doctor afterwards manipulated the craniums of several persons who came forward from the audience, anil gave them the benefit of his opinion as to their respective phrenological developments.

An inquest was held at the Junction Commercial Hotel, Cromwell, on Saturday, the 6th inst., by the Coroner, Vincent Pyke, Esq., on the body of the eldest son of Mr James Scott, of this town. The first n itness examined was William Ma} ne, who deposed that on the evening of the 3rd instant, while looking for driftwood near his residence, about four miles from j Cromwell on tho west bank of the Clutha River, fhe discovered the body of deceased lj-ng on the >- beach. Next day he came into Cromwell and informed Mr Scott of the discovery he had made. James Scott, who was next examined, identified the body as that of his son, whom ha last saw alive on the 24th of June last. On tho 4th of this month he was informed by the last witness that the body of a boy was lying on tho west

bwk of the Molyneux, about four miles from Cromwel 1 . He went to the place indicated, an 1 recognised the body as that of his son. Ho had the body brought into I 'romwell on the following day. Wi'liam Barnes, junior, deposed that on the 23th June, he, in company with de-eased and Several others, were catching drift-wood under tht! Cromwell bridge. In endeavoring to citch a piece of wood, deccsod over-reached himself and fell into the river. Witness did nil he could to save him—going into the river as far as he could do so, and by reaching a stick for him to catch hold of, —but the poor boy seemed quite overcame, and sank almost imme liately. The jury returned a verdict to the effect that " The doceased, James Scott, was accidentally drowned while catching drift-wood at the Cromwell bridge during the late floods."—The funoral took place on the afternoon of the same day, and was largely attended.
