JOTTINGS PROM ALEXANDRA.

(From oar oton Correspondent?) July 11, 1870. A soiree in aid of the school funds took place in the schoolhouse on Tuesday evening last The affair -was well attended both by old and yoxmg, the room being filled to what I would call a good hotise. Tables were stretched across and across the room, and were well laden with the orthodox bans, fruits, and the othor ei teteras th.it jjre usually provided on such occasions—oceans of tea not excepted, of course. The children were well attended to, and apparently got filled to repletion, .and the old folks enjoyed their oup of tea &s they always do. Mi Chapplo wa« in the chair, and did his best during the t evening to keep the time from flagging. Speeches, readings, recitations, and songs were given at intervals, and the affair was Wound up at about 11 p.m. with an auction sale of packets of sweets, &c i which realised close upon £5, 1 understand. This, with the amount taken from the ealo of tickets, will add a considerable sum to the funds. The school is an institution that has been well kept up in Alexandra, having for the past two years been able to I go along with a balance on the correct side, and calls have only been made when any needful repairs have beem required. . The Bchoolmistress is now on her way up, and this long looked-for help will be at work with the girls in a few days—teaching them needlework, &c. There is really nothing else fresh from this place. The rivar still keeps its full summer level, which leaves claim-holders very small hopes of being i able to reach the bottom this season. On receipt of the news in the township ef-4he loss of Mr J. Scott's.eldest boy in he rirer during the late flood, great symathy was expressed for the parents. Mr \ott, who was a resident of Alexandra for feral years previous to his removal tQ iomwell (about a year ago), is well known ire, and of course everyone knew the lad, ho promised to become a wnart youth.
