NAVY LEAGUE.

SCHOOL ESSAY EXAMINATIONS. The examiner's report on the above was duly considered and approved at the last meeting of the executive. It was regarded as affording satisfactory evidence of the growth and reality of the league's work in the Otago schools. Seventy-four schools participated, the largest previous number being 56; over 1)250 pupils wrote essays, and the examiner judged 558 papers, as against 2500 and 490 respectively for last year. The subject of the junior essay was "Life and Exploits of Sir Francis Drake,'' and of the senior "Discuss Present Dangers to British Naval Supremacy, and How Best to Confront Them.''

Some .'SOO prizes are distributed among the schools, these consisting of the, most recent historical and authoritativo works on the navy and the part it has taken in the building of the Empire in all periods of its history. They are liberally illustrated, attractively bound, and each book is stamped with the Navy League monogram. hi the senior essay competition the following pupils of the Balclutha District High School were awarded prizes: Standard VII., Bawiri Coghill. Alice J. Willocks, Mary M. Hull, In the junior competition prizes were awarded to pupils in Olutha aud Bruce schools as follows;
