CORPORATION SALEYARDS.

IMPROVEMENTS WANTED. PROPOSED LOAN OF £IOOO. The following report from the Saleyards Committee was received by the Balclutha Borough Council at its ordinary meeting on Tuesday night:— The committee recommends that all the woodwork of the yards be tarred; that a row of fat sheep pens be erected between the office and the old pig pens, also that a row of cattle pens be erected alongside Grant's fence opposite the cattle pens; that the floors of all pens be concreted; that a sum of money be borrowed to carry out the work, and that a fixed proportion of the yards revenue be set aside to pay off tho loan, Councillor Begg said that the saleyards were .the best asset the borough had. With ever-increasing business in them improvements were necessary, aud he thought something should bo done in this direction now so that they would bo in good order when the wet season set in. The expenditure of £IOOO would do the work, and lie was sure that amount could be paid off ill tea years' time.

Councillor Boyd said lie was pleased to see that the Yards Committee meant to face the position and get something done, it was only a matter of time till there would be weekly stock sales in Balclutha. A coating of tar on the woodwork would do a lot of good, and he would like to see an estimate made up of what would be the cost of laying concrete or bricks in the pens. This would be worth going into. The yards were a good paying concern, and he would be in favour of raising a loan to carry out the required work, making a heavy sinking fund so that the loan would be paid off in a few years' time, He moved that the council ask the Vards Committee to get an estimate of the cost of doing the desired work. This motion was seconded by Councillor Begg and carried. Councillor Boyd said be advisable for the committee to prepare two estimates— one for concreting or bricking the fat sheep pens, and the other for all the work proposed to be done. This suggestion was adopted. Councillor Clark mentioned, that Messrs F, MtfftJnnfef asd. Boa ha§ a

quantity of ...damaged bricks at their Benhar works, and it would be advisable for the committee to inquire as to the coßt of these bricks.—The committee undertook to givo thin suggestion attention.
