WANGALOA SCHOOL.
(Contributed.) On Tuesday evening last the annual break-up of the above school took place. Having the function in &e evening was a departure from the usual afternoon break-up of former years, anil the innovation is thought to be a decided improvement. The school was prettily dewrated with broom and evergreens by the teacher (Miss Watt) and scholars, and this gave the little schoolroom a very attractive appearance. The night was beautifully mild, and this, after the cold withering winds which have been experienced on the coast of late, made it quite a pleasure to be abroad. The entertainment was got up rather hurriedly, and it is unfortunately quite'possible that some who would have liked to have been present did not hear of it until it was over. Notwithstanding a goodly number assembled, and at about. S.liO the concert was opened by the chairman (Mr T. .Johnson), who, in a few remarks, explained the object of ! the gathering. He said that the committee at its last meeting had thought it a good idea to present tlio scholars with a book each. Some of .the scholars who had gained, proliciencv certificates would be leaving this school, and it would be especially pleasing to them to have-some memento of their last year's work in it. The first musical item was a selection from Mr It. Eraser's phonograph, and was followed by an item-by the school children; recitation, Mrs It. Eraser; duet, Mrs T. Johnson and Miss Watt: acting-song, school children; song, Mr G. (<.. Sim; recitation, Miss lvy Scott; song, Mr I'.dwin Hardy; song, Mr P.isseti: soiiji, Miss Watt: song, Mr Ci. C. Si:u. At the conclusion of the programme the chairman, with a few happy words for each, presented the children with their prizes, and as one by one they proudly received and retired with their gii'Lthev were greeted with a goodly rouniWof applause. The announcement that slipper was the very next item was. heaitily received, and very soon all were busily engaged demolishing the excellent repast which the ladies had provided. After supper a few dances were indulged in to music supplied by Mr C. Bissett (violin) and Mrs .Johnson (piano). A'otes of thanks to performers, Miss Watt and the ladies were proposed by Messrs T. .lohnson. It. Eraser and G. G, Sim respectively. Mr Eraser in a neat speech congratulated Miss Watt on the success which had attended her efforts during the past year. The fact that all the scholars who sat for proficiency certificates were successful was a credit to scholars and teacher alike. The singing of ''Auld Lang Syne" terminated what proved to be a very enjoyable evening.
