"BAIT" FOR DOGS.
In the police f o.'ces of the world there is probably no man with a more peculiar job than thai/ of Timothy J. Burke, of New York, It is Burke's duty to act as theatrical prey for dogs that aspire- to. be adjuncts of the force, and as may, be easily imagined, fhe work, is : both unpleasant.and dangerous Whenever the department hears of a dog-that might be trained to run down wiminalis, Burke is sent lorj and the dog set on to him. . -A. recent test with a big, shaggy dog. with long legs and teeth is . described in the New. York 'World Magazine,' Dressed in several suits of clothes, gloves and mufflers, .Burke acted as _ quarry for the dog, which, after seeing a photograph of him, at once singled him out from the other men on the field. The dog chased him, nulled him down and tore savagely at his ■ shoulders. Burke lay motionless with his face on the ground, and the ' dog was called off. "Move your head," said the dog's owner, and the head moved slightly', whereupon the dog at once sprang at the prostrate man and buried its teeth in his neck wrappings. When lie got up he had streaks of blood behind his cars, where claws had furrowed. Then the revolver teat-was applied, Burke trying to keep the pursuing dog off with blank cartridge. Again he was pulled down, and the dog's teeth went through all but one of the mufflers. Five other dogs were put through the same tests, Burke acting as the quarry in every case, and receiving more wounds, in spite of hi& armor. "It's simply a question of getting used to the job," he said afterwards.' "I used to W scared, but now it's as easy as breathing. It ain't the safest work in the world, but it pays well." Twenty dollars is the,* payment for such an afternoon's work and risk, audßurfte is apparently quite satisfied with it, There is a man for every job, ao wv> ..'t9r„ho.w>.j^i6er-'-ib-sa,a|'^„, v v,
