BALCLUTHA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council was held in the Council Chambers, on Tuesday evening. There were present : Messrs Mason (in the chair), Hogg, Hutching., Canning, Stewart, Tosh, and Dunne. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. The Clerk read several letters, but their contents were of no public interest. A letter was read from Mr It. B. Martin, Land Tax Commissioner, requesting the Council to forward the name (by wire) of the person or persons they were desirous of appointing as valuers. Mr Hogg moved, and Mr Stewart seconded, ' - That Clifford Christie be appointed valuer, and that the Clerk forward the name as directed." — Carried. ■GOVERNMENT LOAN. Mr Canning said he would like to Bee something further done to the streets in the. way of repairs. He would, therefore, move, lc That a deputation, consisting of the following gentlemen, be appointed to wait on Mr Macandrew and, if possible, obtain the sum of L 4.000, as a loan towards that object, the deputation to consist of Messrs Hogg, Dunne, and the mover. " Seconded by Mr Hufcchins, and carried. THE POUND. Mr Mason said he would like to draw the attention of the Council to the unsatisfactory condition of the Pound, as regards position. There was no road to it, and they might be as well without one, as it was quite 1 out of their power to take cattle to or from the reserve. After some discussion it was agreed to ask Mr Driver to grant them the use of his sale yards as a temporary Pound. THE MAYORAL ELECTION. The Clerk intimated that, at the late election of Mayor the voting had resulted in a tie between Messrs Hogg" anj. Dunne, and he, as Returning Officer, had given the casting vote in favour of Mr Hogg. This concluded the business.
