We regret to learn that Mrs Bishop, of Balclutha, had her leg broke yesterday by a kick from a young cow. The nomination for the Balclutha Mayoral Election has been fixed for the 16th inst., to-morrow week. We hear that the Kaitangata Sohool Committee intend shortly giving a soiree and dance in aid of the School funds. The oonoert and ball in aid of the Wangaloa School funds takes plaoe this evening, and is expected to be a great success. Mr Deans, Manager Otago Acclimatisation Society placed 1000. trout in the Puerua stream on Tuesday last, also a supply of perch. We have this week to apologise to our readers for the crowding out of a large amount of local matter, leading articles, carrespondence, etc. We are obliged to refer our readers to our advertising columns as to the state of the County elections, meetings of candidates with electors, &o. We need scarcely remind our readers throughout the Clutha district of Mr "Wadd ell's lecture on Burns at the East Clutha Sohool (Mr M'Ewan's) this evening. We understand that by instruction o* the Minister of Works Mr Blair will inspect the river banks here to-day, with a view to reporting to the Government on the subject. W. A. Murray, Esq., M.H.R., has forwarded a cheque to- Mr Geo. Inglis, Stirling, for L 5 on behalf of the Otago Floods Relief Fund for the Matau and Lower Clutha districts. ' A meeting of Committee to arrange for the Warepa and Kaihiku annual gathering in aid of the funds of the Benevolent Institution, will be held at Mr Crawford's store, on Monday evening, at 7 o'clock: A man named Edward Poole was ai*rested by Constable Hughes near to Warepa, on Tuesday. He was sent on to Dunedin where a warrant bad been issued against him for deserting his wife and four children. It will be observed that Barr's Hall will be open for use, free of charge, eveiy Friday, from noon till 3 o'clock. Tt is to be hoped this liberal ty on Mr Lloyd's part will be duly appreciated by the promoters of the weekly market and all who wish to see the institution a success A sad accident occurred at Shore's new shaft on Tuesday evening, resulting in very 'serious injury to one of the -miners named J". / Dobbie. Having been engaged working in the \ new drive, a portion of the conglomerate came / down upon him, breaking a leg and arm of the unfortunate man. We have to call the attention of the electors of South Molyneux Riding to the meetings called by Mr Morton for Monday evening, at the East Olutha* School, and at Owake School on Tuesday evening. We believe Mr Morton will be glad that the other candidates should also address these meetings. Mr Paterson, County Engineer, examined the Matau Bridge, on Monday, when soundings were taken round each pier, -The greatest depth of water was found to he at the second pier from the mainland, where it was 38 feet. It is not supposed that any scour has occurred in the channel sinco the bridge was erected : on the contrary, it seems to be silting up.. ' This is so far satisfactory, and the structure of the bridge is all right in the meantime. We regret to have to report the occurrence of two fires, in Balclutha early yesterday morning. The first -the house of Mr Sievwright, shoemaker — took place at 1 o'clock. Mrs Sievwright was awakened by a noise whioh she at first thought was a flood in the river. She called Mr Sievwright, who saw the kitchen was all in a blazf . He got the children out by their bedroom window, and managed to save only a few articles of clothing. • Mr Sievwright was insured —the building Ll 50, and furniture LSO, V*th in the Colonial Office. Notwithstanding the J*arlv hour, a considerable crowd gathered at tho fire. After the fire had exhausted itself all retired.. Very shortly afterwards another cry of fire was raised— at 3.20 — and this time the scene was Mr A. Bain's'fumiture warehouse. The Bre seems to have been first observed bj' William Mason, who slept indiisjfather's back-shop adjoining Mr Bain's. The alarm was at onoe given, and a crowd again .collected-, but so -far. as. Mr Bain's premises were concerned the flimes had got such a hold.that nothing could be saved. vMr'M=.sonV shop also speedily caught fire, and with its contents, was consumed. His house -was in the greatest danger, andlwas frequently in flames - but these were'got under and. the building saved,: - although much damaged. ?,M'r Mason's furniture,, -was also sa,ved. .Miss Muvray -&nd?j_f»- j&yriis had their furniture removed, but the ; buildings did nob ; catch fire.
