THE MARQUIS OF LORNE.
+ The Marquis of J^orne is t app^in,ted Governor-General "of Canada, and the selection of the. successor to the popular and successful Earl of Dufferin has given general satisfaction. So happy a choice points at once 'to- the hand of Lord Beacon sfield, who, whatever his many faults, has undoubtedly the knack of always hinting on the right man for the right place. To most people Lord Lome is. only familiar as the husband of the Princess Louise, but those who know him personally say that thereis in him no lack of knowledge of men and things, no lack of tact, nor of energy. \ Compelled; by his marriage with a daughter of the Queen to retire from the;arena of too active, politics, -he has not ceased to take a warm and keen interest^ in public; affairs, and the'last objection^ that; could, be made to him would be that he had nor had experi- ; ehce. Aureste, he "|s culj;yre.d, a, poet; courteous, ana 1 sensible, , and,- with, the lustre . his wife's rank will, t^row upon him, may! fairly be expected tp:turn put a .very;' good .jGoVernorrjCjen^raL;- : The. experinienf;^ ; ,of;sen^lin^ £i:,/ Princess; of; Bibbd - L ll6y^l -tp; Canada^ will, dqubtiess proye;\ ,d/ complete "success in drawing, ;as ri it is probably intended to do, the bonds: of ; loyalty of the greaV J)omin-
ion more closely to the Mother Country; and, as such, is regarded as another part of Lord Beaconsfieid's Imperial policy. The Canadians themselves welcome the appointment very heartily, and are not a little proud that a princess is coming- amongst them. They will have a Court which the most malicious could not call a share court; while the amiable Lady of Lome, possessing that infinite tact, sound sense, and discretion, which adorn the character of her royal mother, is certain to win popularity and esteem. Lord Lome goes out in October, and will at once assume office. Apropos, the rumour that H.R.H. the Prince of Wales intends to visit the Australian Colonies gains ground every day. It is 'unlikely that, the visit could he arranged even for next year; but as the Prince himself has frequently expressed his real desire to visit Australia, there is great chance of his carrying it into effect. In which case New Zealand would be sure to be honoured with the presence of the , Heir- Apparent, who will p,-ove much more pleasant a visitor than the Duke of Edinburgh.: If Canada is to have a Princess at Government Plouse, why not Australia V The Queen's family are numerous enough, and when, say 30 years hence, there are many Princes of the Blood Royal, lineal descendants of Queen Victoria, what more honourable, imperial, and worthy office for one of them to hold than Viceroy of the Australian Colonies.— Daily* 'lines' correspondent. ; ,
