Commercial.

Maclean Brothers report, for the week ending August 21, as follows :— Fat Cuttle. — 120 head only came forward for the week's supply. Nearly all these, however, were good to prime quality, and brought very satisfactory prices. We sold, on account of the N. Z. and A. L. Co., from their Totara Estate, a very prime draft of 50 cows. Ifc is sufficient to say that they average within a shade of £14. We also sold on account of Messrs Patrick and Heron, 17 head bullocks afc from ±"11 10s to £1.3 ' cows, from £9 to £12. We quote prime beef at 42s 6d per 1001 b ; medium and inferior, 32s 6d to 37s 6d. Fat Sheep.— 2215 were penned, for which there was fair competition at an advance of Is 6d per head on lust week's rates. Prime quality, heavy weights, brought up to 19s ; medium weights, 12s to 14s —equal to '3d per lb for prime quality. Store Sheep. — iSo transactions. Store Cattle. — We have no sales to report beyond those referred to iv next paragraph. Country Sales. — At Balclutha on Friday last we held a general sale, and on account of various vendors sold 70 head cattle at from £4 10s to £6 each. Also on account of Mr Hislop, cattle, implements, furniture, &c. Dairy cows brought from £6 lOs to £9 ; implements, &c., satisfactory prices. Wool. — Catalogues to the close of the JuneJuly sales are to hand by last mail. Considerable improvement m* prices appears to have.' taken place towards the close of that series, more especially in the case of good combing merino qualities. The result in the case of low merinoes and short heavy cross-breds cannot, however, be said to be so satisfactory, but all have to a greater or less extent participated in the rise. At auction, on Monday, we sold 32 bales and bags at 4r\d to 9d for inferior slipe ; 7 bales, greasy fleece, at 10^d ; 2 bales pieces, greasy, at 7d ; 13 bales, scoured cross-breds, at 14-jd per lb. j Sheepskins. — There was a full attendance at j our sale on Monday, when we catalogued skins of I very ordinary quality. Fair prices were realised, j however. We quote green cross-breds at 4s 3d to ss ; do merinoes, 3s 6d to 4s 7d * dry skins fetched ls lOd to 5s Gd each, according to quality. ] Hides. — None offered. j Tallow. — We sold a few parcels inferior at 24s to 25s 6d per cwt. Grain. — Wheat has been inquired for for export but little or no business has been done during the week as holders seem indisposed to accept the prices offering. Millers are not buying any but prime aamples, of which very few comperatively are in the market. Quotations nominally same as last week. Oats : Stocks are very light, but present rates preclude business for export. We quote good to fine feed, at 3s 9d to 3s lid ; seed and milling, 4s to 4s 2d. Barley of good malting quality is wanted. .None \ offering.
