Seei?jg the very large quantity of snow that has now accumulated within the watershed of the Oluthn and its tributaries, it would be madness to shut our eyes to the fact, that Bnlclutha now occupies a very precarious position. As thfl storm has been, so in all likelihood the flood of the river will be such as the oldest inhabitant has not witnessed. We are no alarmists, but we humbly think the Borong-h Council are bound to adopt immediate measures to obviate or mitigate the probable destruction of property. The most obvious step would be to raise Charlotte-street a few feet, so that it might act as an embankment against the overflow of the river into the main streets. The cost would be comparatively trifling-, and many thousand pounds worth of property mig-ht thereby be saved. Perhaps other steps could be taken, and in the meantime we content ourselves with sim ply. urpingimmediate action on the part of the Council. , $ . In this issue we jrivp a pretty full abstract of the Financial Statement delivered by the Hon. the Treasurer on Tuesday evening. We commend the same to the careful study of our readers. Tt has been characterised as the ablest Financial Statement ever made in the Colony, Tt certainly bears evidence of very careful preparation, and is a full fulfilment of the promises of the Premier and his' colleagues during" the recess. We have no doubt the financial policy enunciated by the Government will have the very hearty approval of tho general public.
