CONCERT AND BALL AT INCH CLUTHA.

Taking into consideration the state of the roads and counter attraction at Baiclutha, there was a very good house at Inch Clutha, on Friday evening. The Chairman, Mr W. A. Mosley, in a few well chosen remarks pointed out that the object for which the concert was intended — the Benevolent Institution — was the most deserving in Otago, and that these concerts tended very much to promote a musical as well as a social feeling in the district. He trusted the concert of that i evening was only a beginning to a series. The concert opened with pianoforte selection, by Miss Townsend, whicli were admirabley rendered. Mr Thomas Parker then sang " Be kind to the loved ones at Home," and had to respond to an encore. Miss Shand— Song, '" The Auld Scotch Sangs," which brought down the house, and secured an encore wliich was responded to. This was followed by Mr B. Parker with " Thou art so near and yet so far." The Misses Aitchison — Duet, "Jenny who lives in the dell," brought applause from the audience as well as the Chairman, who remarked he was astonished, considering the youth of the performers, at the. way they played and sang. Mr Robei^. A} son gave " Silver Threads among the' Gold," which was well received. Mr Stevens recited " The Beautiful Snow " in his usual masterly style. Miss Fanny Anderson sang " Come back to Erin," | and had to respond to a well deserved | encore. Mr Farlie's song " Oh, why left I my hame," was followed with a solo from Miss Susan Mosley, and who had to resi^ond to an encore. Miss Townsend's . song " The Gipsy's Warning " was well received, and Mr Casado gave " Molly Darling." Miss Shand — " Sweet Bell Mahonej" and to an encore "Tap, Tap, Tapping at the Garden Gate." The duet " The Auld House " by the Misses Aitchison was applauded. Mr John Fraser sang " Sweet Spirit here my Prayer." The Misses Mosley sang a duet very sweetly. Mr Forester sang " Flora Bell. " Miss Fanny Anderson, " I canna leave the Old Folks yet," but the audience desired to keep her by asking for an encore. Mr John Stephenson's comic song, " I want to go Home to Mamma," was encored. Misses Townsend and Mosley rendered a pianoforte duet very well. The trio by Misses and Mr Canning was encored.

Votes of thanks were given to the ladies and gentlemen who had given their services, also to the Chairman, and the concert was brought to a close by the singing of the National Anthem. We may say the success of the concert was greatly assisted by Mrs Townsend who gave . her piano for the occasion.

The Ball opened with between thirty and forty couple taking the floor, and a large programme was kept up with spirit.
