WYNDHAM AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL SOCIETY.
A meeting of the Committee of the above Society was held in Mr Lunny's Hotel on Saturday, Juue 29. There were present Messrs Robertson, Milne, Richardson, Lottin, Dr Macaffer, and Dr Menzies, President of the Society, in the chair.
The chief business of the meeting was in regard to the, advisability of obtaining the services of a first-class draught horse for the Mataura districts. . ■-- .
Mr Milne, who had been commissioned to make inquiry of kindred societies as to their mode of procedure, stated that he had obtained very little satisfactory information, as all the societies he had communicated with had difficulties to contend with in the same matter, and therefore could not advise. •
. After a discussion, it was moved by Mr G. F. Richardson, seconded by 'Mr Jas. Milne, and : unaniiriously; agreed ... to1^- " That the most desirable course to secure the services' of a first-class draught . entire horae for the district/would be to -send -a"
Representative of this Society with power % make terms to attend the walking show at some large centre." Mr Richardson moved, and Mr Milne seconded—" That the Society undertakes that sixty mares shall be given to the horse, and stipulates that it shall serve no greater number during the season ; that the charge shall be four guineas for service, or six guineas with a guarantee, at the option of the owner of the mare ; that the Society will give a premium of L 25 to the owner of the horse for its service ; that the district shall be from Gore to Pine Bush, deviating from the main road at no more than three miles from it at any point." The motion was carried.
The President called the attention of the Committee to the desirability of having a series of lectures on agricultural chemistry, &c., by Dr Black, throughout the country during the summer months. It was moved by Mr Robertson, and seconded by Dr Macaffer— " That the President be requested to enquire of the Chancellor of the Otago University whether it would be practicable for Professor Black during the summer to give a series of popular lectures on agricultural subjects. This Society would be much gratified if the Professor could give some lectures on such subjects in this district as the Committee would not only take a great interest in them, but also be likely to derive greab benefit from them." The remainder of the business was of a formal nature.
