RESULT OF A CHILD'S QUESTION.

A sceptic, who by science's way Could many a theory well defend, Chanced one bright summer eve to pay A visit to a wealthy friend. The latter had a lovely child, That played about the spacious floor, And oft the sceptic's heart beguiled With merry peals of laughter pure. With armß extended wide, he said : " Do come, my pretty dear, to me." She ran— rher toys before him laid ; He, smiling, took her on his knee. Quoth he, " Thy toys are nice and rare, Thy ringlets, too, how bright they be, Thy rosy cheeks and neck so fair — 1 A world of beauty lies in thee." " A world ! what is a world 1 " she cried ; • *-» " 'Tis all the big round earth," said he j if W- , " 'Tis allthe fields and meadows wide, And all the lands o'er hill and sea." With childhood's wondering gaze she said, " What a big thing a world must be j When came it hero, how was it made. 11 Canst thou, kind sir, tell that to me?" " My little maid, with great delight. The time it came, I ne'er could know. 'Twas never mado, but grew by night, As mushrooms in the meadow grow." , She paused a moment on his knee, The flower of that wealthy home ; Then, with a wistful look, quoth she, ' c But, sir, where did the seed come from? ' All speechless sat the sceptic there, And on his hand hiß head reposed, While that sweet, earnest searching stare Its angel innocence disclosed ; Then slowly raised his head and spoke, " Thou art a world of joy tb me I The night is gone, the day is broke, And heaven in thy blue^eyes I see."
