Commercial.
• Messrs Maclean Brothers report for the week ending June 5, as follows : — Pat Cattle. —The supply was to-day again under the average, as regards numbers ; 120 head only having been yarded- Of these about half were good to prime, and the remainder very ordinary. Prices for best quality conseq\iently advanced fully 2s 6d per lOOlbs. At the yards we sold 70 head on account of the N. Z. and A. L. Co., 27 bullocks at £1017s 6d to £14, and 14 cows at £9 ns to £1110s;, on account of Messrs Lamond and others, 28 head at £8 to £9 12s 6d— equal to 32s 6d for prime, and 25s to 27s 6d for inferior to ordinary quality, per lOOlbs. Privately we have placed 40 head. Fat Calves. —A few only were penned, which sold at 33s to 40s each. Pat Sheep.—l4oo were penned, all cross-breds, ' a number, however, being of very ordinary quality; Prices of all descriptions were a shade higher than last week,"and the market was cleared. We sold 570 on, account of Messrs Cameron, Landells, and others, at from 10s 3d to 14a each—equal to 2fd for prime quality per lb. Store Sheep.—During tho week some business
has been clone in this class oE stock, although exi cepfc for good cross- breds for turnip feeding, and inferior sheep for boiling down, the demand has not been very active. We have placed 5500 cross-bred ewes and 1500 mixed merinoes and cross-breds at satisfactory prices. Store Cattle. — With the exception of some 70 head mixed cattle sold at country sales, wo have no transactions to report. Quotations without change. Country Sales. —On Friday the 31st ult , we held a clearing sale of stock, implements, &c, at Newstead, farm Wangaloa. There was a large attendance of buyers, and satisfactory prices were obtained. .Draught horses, €30 to £42 ; hacks, £7 10s to £18 ; foals. £9 10s to £14 10s.. Cows, £6 10s to £12 5s ; heifers, £6 10s to £12 10s ; steers, £3 10s to £6 j 15 calves, £2 7s 6d to £3 2s 6rl. Also, at Messrs Walker and Davidson's Warepa, {on Tuesday the 4th inst., we held a very satisfactory sale considering the very in. clement state of the weather. Draughts realised from £34 to £57 10*. 2-vear-olds, £20 to £26 10s ; foals, £9 10s to £15. "Cows, £4 10s te £7 15s. 200 ewes, at 10s 3d. Implements, harness, &c., at fair value. We beg to draw attention to our clearing sale at " Lady Bank " farm, Catlins River, on behalf of Mr J. F. Jack, on Friday tho 14th instant. Wool. Since our last report the following telegram has been received from London under .date June 1 : " The wool sales continue firm, and prices have recovered from the temporary relapse." At our w eekly sale here on Monday last we sold a few bales of greasy wool, which fetched lid per lb. Sheepskins. — The supply is still very limited, and iOur catalouge this week comprised onlv a small number, which sold at from 2s 6d to 3s 9d. Grain. — Wheat has not been dealt in to any great extent this week, and prices arc without change. The highest price going for milling is 4s 3d. Barley of all descriptions is in short supply. Malting may be quoted at os. Gd. Oats are onquired after for shipping, but the supply in town is very limited. Good feed is now worth 3a 5d ; milling, 3s 6d:
Mr A. Mercer reports for tho week ending
June 5, as follows : — Retail prices only. — Fresh butter, in^lb and lib prints, is 4d to Is Gel per lb ; tresb butter iu lumps, Is 4d per lb; powdered and salt butter, | Is 2d to Is 3d per lb ; fresh butter is very scarce, do not remenber seeing it so scarce fou many years as it was last week. Salt butter in kegs, lOd the 10hd per lb. Cheese, best quality, 8d to lOd. Side" and rolled bacon, 9cl to lOd'per lb. Colonial hams, Is per lb ; English hams, Is 2d to Is 4d per lb. English cheese, Is 4d per lb, . but no demand for either. Eggs still continue scarce and still retailing at Ss Gd per dozen.
