THE WAREPA HUNDRED.

, At the meeting of the Waste Lands Lands Board last week, the following report from Messrs H. Clark and J. W. Thomson, the Commissioners appointed to inspect the lands in the Warepa Hundred, and to report upon the best method for dealing with the same, was read and adopted : —

" We have the honour to report that we have gone over blocks VII., IX., X., and XL, Warepa district. We consider thafc the following section are suitable for deferred payments, viz. — 3,5, 6,7,8,9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 19, 20, and 21, block X.; sections 18, 25, and 26, block IX.; sections 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, block VII.; and section 12, block XI. We would therefore recom-

mend that these sections be opened for settlement as deterred payment sections, and that the other sections be sold by auction at £1 per acre. We would draw the attention of the Board to the fact that a greater number of the sections which we consider suitable for deferred payment settlement are very small in area, two of them being under 60 acres each, and several others are not much larger. We may state that we consider such small sections are quite unsuited for tbis part of the country, and that, in surveying these small areas an unnecessary expense has beeu incurred. We believe that the smallness of the sections will to some extent act against the profitable occupation of the district, because, in terms of tbe 57th section of tbe Laud Act, one person can take up only one allotment. We would therefore take the liberty of suggesting that the Board, before opening up the land for sale, should consider the expediency of putting two or more of the smaller allotments into one, and thus make a fair-sized section. We would also direct the attention of the Board to tbe fact tbat, in surveying the land, little regard lias been paid to selecting suitable lines for fencing .purposes. We noticed some boundaries of sections which it would be difficult indeed to fence. .We believe that, with the exercise of a little more care, this serious inconvenience might have been very much lessened. Since writing tho above, we understand that block VII. is outside the Hundred, The Board, therefore, cannot comply with the recommendation at present as regards this block,"
