BRUCE COUNTY COUNCIL.
Tlie ordinary monthly meeting of tlie I Bruce County Council was lield in the Council Chambers, Milton, on Tuesday last. There were present : Messrs H. Clark (Chairman), Landels, Wayne, Smith, Duff, Murray, and Petrie. . Tlie minutes of tbe previous meeting were read and confirmed ; and the outward and inward correspondence was read. MATAU BRIDGE. A letter was read from the Clerk io the Matau Boad Board, requesting that the balance of subsidy (£ls) be either pnicl over to the Board or expended in metalling the southern approaches to the bridge. ■ It was moved by Mr Smith, seconded by Mr Duff and carried—" That no action I be taken in the matter until an agreement ' be come to between tho Board and the Clutha County Council, as to wliicli of those bodies is entitled to the money, it being claimed by both." KAITANGATA PUNT. A communication from the Matau Road Board, asking the Council to tako charge of the Kaitangata punt was declined. WAIPORI ROAD BOAItD. A request from the Waipori Road Board to have a road-line closed in Blook X., Clarendon, was refused in tlie meantime. MEDICAIi REPORT. A report was read from Dr Rogers, that eight new cases of scarlet fever had occurred at Waihola since last meeting, but all were now convalescent.' About one half of the families had already been effected, and although a few dropping cases might yet occur he believed the backbone of the epidemic was broken. He suggested that the School Committee should see that proper disinfection had been carried out in houses where the fever had been before the children were allowed to return to school. The Chairman was requested to arrange with Dr Rogers as to further visits to Waihola. BALMORAL AND CHRICHTON" ROAU BOARDS. The following report was read •: — Milton, March 28, 1878. Sir,— Your Committee appointed to fix the proportion, of money thit the Crichton
j road district has to pay the Balmoral I road district' for the maintenance of dia- ! crict road forming the boundary between the road districts, have to report that they mot and went over the road between the districts on 25 th Maroh ; and find that only a small portion of tlie Crichton Roarcl District could fairly bo rated for the maintenance of the road referred to, only that portion lying between the road and Stony Creek, which amount to IGOO acres, and I the rates derived from it amount to £9 in 6d. Qn the other hand we found that the Balmoral Road District lying between this road ancl Clutha Rivei' was nearly all interested in the maintenance of this road, amounting to 9500 acres, ancl the rates derived from it amounting to £70 10s. As there are other roads, in the district requiring attention, those leading from district road to the houses not having a frontage to the district road, Aye would think that one-fifth of the total amount woulcl be required for the maini tenauce of these roads, ancl the remainder available for the main district road. As the- acreage in the Balmoral district is nearly six times the amount of the acreage in the Crichton district, and the amount of rates derived from the Balmoral district is seven times the amount derived from Chrichton district, we would recommend that tlie proportion that the Crichton Road Board has to pay the Balmoral Road Board for the maintenance of the district road be at the proportion of one to five, less 10 per cent, required for the collection of rates and incidental expenses incurred by the Board in fixing the rate, etc. Henry Clark ) Members Fred. Wayne \ of Robt. Murray ) Committee. MATA.U BRIDGE. Mr Petrie moved—" That the Clutha County Council be requested to take over the control ancl management of the Matau bridge from the Bruce Council."
