LAND AT WAIKAIA, WA IK AKA, AND TEVIOT.
At the Land Board meeting last week If Messrs Bastings, Clark, and Green, the* I special commissioners deputed to- report J on applications to throw open land fbr settlement in the above districts, sub- | mitted the subjoined report, which the ■'*•* 1 Board adopted : — | We have the honour to report having- I! visited and inspected the land comprised J in the several blocks referred to in the- A memorial of the inhabitants of Waikaia, 1 and find the whole of tbe land asked to* | be thrown open for selection as suitable j> for agricultural settlement, and the 1 greater part thereof admirably adapted | for settlement upon the deferred pay- A meni system; but we are of opinion* A\ that other boundaries than those sug- | gested by the memorialists will conduce i more to the furtherance of the general J welfare in the disposal of the public. j estate, and have therefore to request a that you will forthwith ask. the Chief" -i Surveyor to be good enough to instruct 1 Mr Surveyor Murray, who is now in yA the locality, to put himself in communi- ~\ cation with Mr Warden Wood, who has "A kindly consented to point out to* tho A surveyor the several boundaries re- "1 solved on by us, while on the ground, 1 after carefully considering all the surrounding circumstances, and having- A due regard to the conservation of the* various interests affected herein and hereby, ancl we here take the- op- -.'• portunity of recording that we wareagreeably surprised to find that there is .-i such an extent of really first-class agri- ; cultural land yet available for settle- I ment in Waikaia electoral district. Not 1 only are the several blocks, now under .>j report of a first-rate quality but others* A of equal quality and greater extent can | be selected in the immediate vicinity "A whenever required fbr the purpose of ' A extending agricultural settlement. We now recommend, as most suitable for present requirements a block of 4000 acres on run 326, east' side of the Waikaia river, above Switzers r and comprising the land lying betweeu j W bod's large paddock on the south and large a patch of scrub near Macdonald's woolshed on the no'-th *; also, a block of about 5000 acres on run 326 r comprising Rob Roy Gully and adjoin- A ing run 194 ; also, a block of about 5000 acres on run 19-1 immediately Al within its boundary,, adjoining the-block J. in 826 and extending in the direction off -A; the sheep wash and the Mataura river ; also a block of 5000 acres in run .193. at the junction ofthe Waikaia with the- j Mataura, said block to have a fronu-ge I.A of two miles or thereabouts to each of the- rivers ahove named, and to extend l back tp within a distance of about 120' chains of the Otama creek ;. also a block -. of 5000 acres above the town bf Waikaia. and adjoining the block lately sold. [• We recommend the surveying- of theabove blocks into suitably sized sections, -<**; the survey to be pushed on with all convenient speed, and the land open for- , V selection generally upon the deferred '/■ payment system. Should- this be done; ' ■ forthwith, we have no doubt, from, the- *.' very superior quality of the land, that it will be readily taken up and occupied- -.*'■' We have further to report, after enquiry instituted and inspection ma der of the block of about 9000 acres, latelypetitioned for by the Miller's Flat settlers as being suitable for settlement,, that there is every probability of thewhole of tho said blook been taken up for actual settlement as soon as it is* brought into the market. We thereforerecommend that the land ■' comprisedtherein should be opened for; selection,, partly under the agricultural lease's *' system and partly under the deferred! payment system, so soon as the survey ,;_, can be completed. We may here add! ■ that there ns comprised within this; A block some really first-class agricultural V land, and well adapted -for 'successful; -A occupation upon the deferred payment A system. In response to the memorial of settlersin the Teviot district we recommend; A the opening up of a block of 5000- acres- A on the east side ofthe Clutha river ons run 199. Altogether we cannot say- '; tbat the land, in this block- is* of a first Ay rate quality, ltis undoubtedly superior S to most of the land that "has- been, '':*? opened up for. settlement inahat locality,, . % ahdt'frbm the greataiixietylhat prevails- A% Anthe district' fbr ; the* extension of settle- ' 1 >ment,. we have.no doubt it ,will speedily .| : be taken up. ,.,*.-../ ' -f << L We further recommend that a block 1 f .of 2,sp.Q;:acres2on tbe^west j-jjde- of . the-'Cr^l -•Clmha-River on run r 389 be opened for!
