I suggested to Mr Lmiadi that the hest way to expend, the money would be through the County "Council of Clutha. He is ! of the same opinion. He desired me to write, to ' you to see whether the Council would undertake the expenditure of this particular sum of money on the road referred to. If the Council is agree- | able, he will make arrangements for meeting the cost of tho work.' It would be desirable that you should bring this matter before the County Council at their next meeting. Captain Mackenzie moved — "That the terminus of any railway to be constructed from Waipahi in the Tapanui district should for ' the present be at Kelso, for the reason, that the selection of any other terminal pointy would debar most of the ratepayers o£ this County located in that district from availing themselves of the said railway, and necessitate the formation of costly iroads and bridges by the County to enable the said ratepayers to reach the trunk line between Waipahi and Gore, and .that a- copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Government." In speak.ng to the motion Captain Mackenzie said i

lie Avas given to understand the Government had already agreed to construct the line from Wn.ipa.hi via Tapanui to . Kclso. The settlers wished the terminus to be at Kelso, as it would be most convenient for them, fold lie (Captain Mackenzie) wished bhat Council to support them in this, upon the ground, that it would prove a great saving to the County in road-making. If the line were not continued 'past 'Tapanui the roads necessary to enable, the settlers to take advantage of railway communication would bo difficult and expensive, whereas by continuing the line to Kelso the j township of Tapanui would have full advantage of the railway, while its benefits would at the same time be extended to the surrounding settlers, and the roads to the terminus would be easily made. Mr Scobte, in seconding the motion, said the extension of the railway, while it did not prejudice the interests of Tapanui, would prove a great boon to others. Mr Scott said lie was not sufficiently acquainted with -the matter to enable him to decide one way or another. After some further explanation by Cap- j tain Mackenzie, the motion wns carried. RAILWAY CROSSING AT CLINTON. Mr Soobie mentioned that a cutting had i been made in the main road at the j railway crossing at Clinton which had been left in a very dangerous state.
