On Tuesday night Mr Ballance stated in the House of Representatives that since last October iir r ,Vhitakor had obtained 18,000 acres, of a block of -200,000 acres, at 5s per acre, which was well worth Ll. Mr Whitaker had taken advantage of being in ofiice to, obtain under pretences of exchanging such lands to which he was entitled, a block of- land which had cost the Colony L 17.000. The 18,000 acres were the only valuable part of the 200,000 acres. Mr Whit, aker's proper course, he said, if he had any claim for compensation, should have been to have come to tho House for it iustead of settling with himself in land.
