GOOD TEMPLARY.
A lodge of the Independent Order of Good Templars was instituted nt Clinton on Monday pvening by the District Deputy, kindly assisted hy the following officers of'the Lndffo Hopp of Balclutha": Bro. R. Hogg, W.C.T.; Bro M'Kenzie, 1..D.; Bro. Kilgour, W.F.S ; and Bro. 0. FTogo-, W.M. Although the weather in Balolutha was fine during the forenoon, it was a severe snowstorm' accompanied with a cold biting wind in the Waiwpra and Popotunoa districts. It was not thprofore expected that the institution would fake place that evening, and therefore tbe attendance was not nearly so large as it otherwise would have been. There was a sufficient number present, however, to form a lodge. The ceremony took place in the schoolhouse, nt 8 o'clock. The instituting officer, having briefly explained the object of the meeting, and the candidntps having refirpd, the lodo* R was on-npd in due form, after which the initiations were gone tbwmrh, and afterwards the lodge instituted. Tbe lodge then proceeded to eUct its officers for the present quarter, with the following result:— L D., Bro. Rev. C. Connor; P.W.C.T., Bro. Milbgan* W.G.T.. Bro. Mainland ; W V.T., Bro. Clifford : W.C, Bro. h'ev. 0. Connor; W..S.', I>o. Coombes* W.F.S., Bro. Temp.pton ; W.T., Sister Templeton ; W.M., Bro. Bunyan ; W.T.G , Bro Brookes ■ and W.0.G., Bro Stpvens. The officers were then duly installed by the District Deputy. Jt was resolved tbat the meetings be held weekly in the schoolhouse,^ ond other business of a routine nature was gone through. The presiding officer then addressed the lodge. He explained the objects and aims of Good Templary, the'progress of the Ordpr, and the working of lodgps. He counselled tbpra to cherish and encourage n spirit of harmony and brotherly kindness and charity within their lodge, and to maintain an unblemished, straightforward, and upright course of action in the world. He'as-s\\r-?d them tliat it" they did so, nnd that if they were guided by prudence and modei ation in the Good Templar cause, they wonld have the sympathy and respect of all whose good opinions they valued. He counselled thorn to continue steadfast and pprsevere in the enn^e they had adopted, and assured them of the pleasure he had in presiding on the occasion, and on learning from them the good prospect, there wai of the lodge shortly securing a lar^e membership. Bro. R. Hogg also addressed the lodge, giving some useful practical hints as to rbe working of the. Order, and advising as to the course they ought to pursue. Bro. Connor, in his own name and on behalf of the member? of the -newly instituted lodge, heartily thanked the District Deputy, nnd the officers who had accompanied him for their attendance and for the large amount of information and instruction they had imparted. The lodge was then closed in the usual manner by the W.C.T.. and the proceedings terminated about 10 o'clock.
