Wellington, October 25. In the Legislative Council to-day, in reply to the Hon. Mr Holmes, as to whether the Government has directed, or if not is prepared to direct, that New Zealand coal shall be used on the steamers and on the railways of the Government, and whether instructions had been given to adapt furnaces of new engines in process, of construction for the. use of New Zealand coal, Col. Wliifcmore replied that the Government had already taken action, and that the Greymouth coal could be used without altering the furnaces. In reply to the Hon. Mr Williamson, as to whether steps have been taken towards getting the prohibition removed which now exists against the landing of cattle and sheep in the Australian colonies from this Colony, Col. Whitmore replied that the Government, since taking office, have ordered letters to be written the Governments of all the Australian Colonies, urging the desirability of the prohibition being removed. Sydney, October 25. A vessel arrived at Cooktown from Paupua, reports a great gold discovery on the North-west Coast. The vessel has specimens on board.
