Commercial.
Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co., report for the week ending October 3, as follows ; —
Fat Cattle. — A medium supply came forward, 128 head being yarded, chiefly of ordinary quality. Prices, however, may be quoted fully 2s 6d per 1001 b, over late quotations. We sold 108 on account of James Smith, Esq., Greenfield, James Shand, Esq., Messrs John Mackley and Robert Gibson. Bullocks brought from £10 to £13 17s 6d ; £8 to £10 ss— prices equal to 32s 6d per 1001 b for prune quality, and 27a 6d for medium. We "havo also sold 55 head privately at figures equal to 30s per 1001 b. Store Cattle. — For this class of stock there is a good demand, and several transactions have transpired during the Week. Our sales comprise 350 head at'a satisfactory price. Fat Lambs. —A good many came to hand, but prices continue firm. We sold 86 at from 9s to 15s each.
Fat Sheep.— The moderate number of 1700 was penned, all of which were cleared at prices showing .it least \d per pound advance on the late rates. We sold on account of Mr Peter Gibson, 327 cross-breds, at from 14s 9d to 16s 9d ; on account of Messrs Murray, Roberts, and Co.,
500 cross-breds at from 14s to Ifis 6d— or equal to 3d to 3|d per lb. During the week we delivered to the trade -500 cross-breds previously contracted for.
Store Sheep.— -We havo inquiries for both crossbreds and merino wethers; At present we have no transactions to report, but have several pending.
Country Sales. — On Friday, 28fch September, we had a clearing sale by auction on account of Mr Charles FinlaysoA, at Clinton. There was a good attendance, and bidding was spirited. Medium draughts brought from £25 to £30; light horses, from £11 to £14 .; dairy cows, £5 10s to £6 10s ; mixed cattle, £3 15s to £6 5s ; crossbred sheep, 8s to 10s ; merino ewes, 3s 6d : farming implements &c„ at satisfactory rates. Horses. — There still exists a good demand for heavy draught and good upstanding light harness horses. At our yards on Saturday, 29th ult., we sold three teams on account of Mr John Campbell, which, although in very poor condition, fetched prices that , were considered to be extremely good. A fair proportion of light harness horses also changed hands. We quote first-class draughts at £45 to £50 ; medium, £35 to £40 ; good hacks nnd light "harness horses, £25 to £30 ; medium, £14 to £20 j light and inferior, £3 to £10.
Annnal Walking Show.— Our 13th annual Walking Show of Thoroughbred Entires was held yesterday. The number of entries waa slightly ia excess of last year's. Immediately after the Show was heM a sale of entires at the Provincial Yards, with the folio win -gresult s—On account of it. Symmons, Esq., the imported thoroughbred entire horse Young Angler, to Mr Thomas George, at 240 guineas -, on account of Mr George M 'Gavin, the Clydesdale entire horse Young (Hero, to Mr Robert Clarke, Balclutha ; on account of Mr William Reid, the Clydesdale entire horse Young Thane of Clyde, to Messrs R and T Haworth, Ka-ihiku ; on aocount of Mr W. Allen, the Clydesdale entire Buke of Argyle to Mr George Wallace, Green Island, prices being withheld -, -on account of Mrs Donald Grant, Kirklands, the Clydesdale entire Young Reformer, and on account of Mr William Montgomery the Clydesdale entire Young Baron, both of which were passed in at auction at 150 guineas each, but have since beon sold — the former to Mr Francis Gawn, and the latter to Mr Richard Symmons. The brown entire colt General Outram, which was passed in at the sale for 175 ■guineas, and also his stable companion the Earl of Gowrie, passed in at 235 guineas, still remain iv our hands for private -sale. They are the property of Peter Grant, Esq., Gowrie, West Taieri, ank, if net sold, will travel tho Taieri district.
Mr A. Mercer reports for the week -ending October, 3rd.
Retail Prices. — Fresh butter, in £Ib prints, lOd to Is per lb; fresh batter in lumps, 9d to lOd ptr lb; powdered and salt butter lOd per lb. The supply of fresh "butter is very plentiful— several of the shops refusing to take any more in, and prices are still falling, and unless there is some other market for the butter, it will bo ■unsaleable at any price. Cheese, best quality lOd to Is. Side and rolled bacon, 9d ; Colonial hams, lOd to ls ; English liams, ls 3d. Eggs are very plentiful and are retailed at ls 3d per doz.
