MATAU ROAD BOARD.
The usual monthly meeting of fche Matau. Road Board was held in the Schoolhouse, Inch Clutha, on Saturday afternoon. Thero wero present : Messrs Inp-lis (Chairman), Mosley, M'Donald, Anderson, and Pell. MINUTES. The minutes of previous meetingwere read and confirmed. COU RESPONDLNCB. A letter was read from Mr Dunnet, formerly lesspe ofthe Kaitana*ata punt, forwarding LlO, being half amount of arrears of rent, and promising to remit the balance within a week. Resolved that the letter be received, and the remittance acknowledged.
Letter from Mr Alex. Doull, complaining ot want of road to bis prooertv. It was pointed out that there was no road-line to Mr Doull's house. The Clerk was instructed to reply that the Board had no funds' at its disposal for the work.
Letter fiom Mr Wm. Neal, mentioning that in ooris-pquericfl of the recent flood, several -Jul verts at the bottom of the island had been destroyed, aud the road rendered quite imoa sable . Mr Bell ex-ilauied the nature and extent of tlio damage.
Messrs Mosley and Bell were instructed to examine in*o the matter, and report at next meeting. THE COAL JROAD. Letter from n number of ratep-iy-u-s in the Hillend distiict, pointing out rhe impassable state oi the coai road, and suggesting* that the same be metalled during the t uuiraer. Mr Anderson said the road had been in a very bad state during the winter. There was more traffic upon it than upon any other road within the district. Last year be had given a donation of LlO towards the repair of the road, upon certain conditions which the Board had agreed fo, hue which the ratepayers did not consider had been carried out. It was too early in tbe season to metal the road, and therefore he in the meantime moved that a man be employed to fill up the ruts. Permanent works could be considered afterwards. j Mr Bell seconded the motion. The Chairman explained . that tbe Board had expended L3o upon the road last year besides the subsidy, but in consequence ot the change in the system of Government, one quarter's subsidy .was lost. The motion was carried. ROADS ON INCH CLX. TftA, On tbe motion of Mr Mosley, it -was agreed to employ a surface man for a few clays to fill up ruts in the pravelled portions of the roads on Inch Clutha. WORKS IN STIRLING. A letter was read from a number of ; ratepayers in Stirling, pointing out the necessity, of having certain . ditches cleaned but and roads formed in the
township of "Stirling, the writers agr c ing to pay half the cost. Mr Anderson explained tbe nature of the .works required, and moved that rhe same* be carribd ouc, the Board paying half the cost. Seconded by Mr Mosley, and carried, tenders to be called for. TENDERS. Tenders for a road aud ditch on Inch Clutha were opened. The same were considered too high, and it was resolved to call for fresh tenders. KAITANGATA ROAD. It was resolved to have the ditches near to Hislop's cleaned out. Mr Anderson called the attention of the Board to the wretched state of the road at Kaitangata township. Th^re was a consider able quantity of metal lying alongside the road through the swamp, which might not be required there for many years. He suggested that it might be utilised for the road at the township. The Board, was spending* money by hundreds of pounds, and throwing it into swamps upon Inch Chuha and elsewhere, while the Kaitangata road was neglected, and the people in the township left to wade through a sea of mud. There was a very large traffic upon the road, and he objected to so much money being spent upon Inch Clutha, while it wab neglected. The Chairman said he believed 2s a yard would remove the metal to the road referred to, and place it upon the road. After some discussion it was agreed to delay doing anything in the matter till the season was further advanced. THE BRDCE COUNTY SUBSIDY. It was resolved that tenders be called for the expenditure of tbe LSO, Bruce County Council subsidy, upon metalling tbe road from Rae's hotel, Stirling, to the railway station. The Chairman mentioned that Mr J. C. Anderson had offered to ..supply the stone from his quarry at 3d per yard. The offer was accepted, and it was agreed to utilise the quarry refuse for repairing the road from Stirling to the railway bridge. ACCOUNTS. The following* accounts were passed for payment: — R. M'Kinlay, L 9 10s; W, Neal, L 64; W. W at r-?,"LU); John Nelson, L 6; John Fraser, L 3* 3; Thos. B. Mnir, L 3; li. Cramond, LlO 3s. HAT lis. The Cleric reported that he bad collected Ll6l of rates. It was resolved that it be left; to the Clerk to give the statutory public notice of the time and place for receiving payment ofthe balance of rates. NOTICE OF MOTION. Mr Anderson gave notice that at next meeting be would move tbat tbe sum agreed to by the Board last year be now expended upon the quarry road. The meeting* then adjourned.
