IMMORAL PUBLICATIONS.
We recently had occasion to draw attention to the injury clone to public morals, and tho insult to the good taste of the community by the publication in the Dun. din papers of the most indelicate and disgusting details of the late prosecution, Riigina v, Proudfoot. As the evidence is shortly to be repeated in the Supreme Court, the public apparently have taken the alarm lest they should again have served out to them morning and evening a hash of obscenity. With a view to prevent such a calamity tho following letter has been addressed to tho Dimedin papers. It will bo regarded as an extraordinary and very humilitating circumstance that it should be necessary to send such a communication to gentlemen having the control of the press hi tho most imp orfcaut oity of a British Colony. Tlio fo! lowing is the document : —
Sir,-- In view of the serious injury which by very general aclaiowledgement was done to public morals by the publication of certain painful details in a recent case which is now again coming beforo tho public, we desire to give expression to the earnest hope that you will see your way in the interest, especially of the morals of the youth of the community, to suppress such details.— We are, etc., E. G. Edwakds, Archdeacon, St. Paul's Church. D. M. Stuaut, Knox Church. Thomas Rosebv, Congregational Church. Alex anoku -Blake, Kaikorai, C. J". BvNtt, St. Matthew's.
It is bnt right to add that the Guardian appends tlio following note to the letter : — " Wo have already expressed* regret at the circumstances referred to, and it will be our endeavour to accede, as far a-j possible, to the desire expressed by our correspondents. "
