BALCLUTHA ATHENÆUM.
A meeting of Committee was held in the library on "Wednesday evening." There were present :: Messrs Rite-hie (President), A. Grigor, Turnbull, Nelson, Coasens, Cramond, Whyte, Macdonald, T. Paterson, and Fleming. Tlte minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Mr Macdonald reported that during the .past week he had procured twelve new ' subscribers to the institution^ ; and that. Other si's: had promised to join. The Secretary reported that thirty members "had now paid up for the current .year, and nine were still unpaid. Mr Macdonald considered that by a. little exertion on the part of members of Committee the membership could be easily raised to fifty. A conversation ensued as to the finances of the institution, which seem to be getting into a more satisfactory position. The Treasurer was instructed to make a pay^ inent to tlie 'bank to reduce the overdraft to L3O. An application from the Juvenile Good Templar Lodge for the use of the hall from 6 to 8 o'clock on Friday evenings was granted. There was no other business.
