Mr A. Mercer reports for the week ending Augusts, as follows : —

Retail prices only,— Fresh buttor, in hlh and lib prints, ls 9d to la lOd ; fresh butter, in lamps, ls 4d ; powdered and salt butter, Is 4d. Tho market is well supplied with fresh butter at this season of tlie year, but some of the qualities are very inferior. Salt butter in keg is veiy plentiful, and uo. prices offering. Cheese, best quality, lOd to ls. Side and rolled bacon, 9d to lOd ; Colonial barns, Is to ls 2d ; English hams, ls .Sd. Eggs are still in good demand at 2s per dozen.

Messrs Maclean- Brothers report for the week ending August 8, as follows : — ■

Fat Cattle.— Tho supply forward for to-day's market was a moderate one of 142 head, of which the greater portion was good quality. For best pens prices were a shade higher, but the avnrago rates wore only about equal to those ruling last week, viz., 32s (3d for prime, and from 27s <xl to 30s for ordinal y quality, por lOOibs. At. tho yards we sold 50 hend on account of the New Zealand aud Australian Laud Company, Messrs Davidson, Patrick, and others, at prices ranging from £7 5s to £L 4 17s 6dfor bullocks, and £0 12a 6rl to £14 7s Gd for cows ; tho latter price being, obtained for a pen of polled Angus cows of very superior quality, bred and fattened by the New Zealand and Australian Land Company on their Moeraki ostate.

Pat Sheep. — 1726 wero penned, all medium to good quality, which found buyers at from Is to Is Gd advanco on last week's rates, or say, equal to 3d per lb. For cross-breds tho prices ranged from lis 6d to 14s 6d.

Store Sheep. — Young cross-breds and merinos still continue in request, but we have heard of no transactions of any importance during tho week. Our sales consist of 750 cross-breds. Wo have buyers for 10,000 maiden merino ewes.

Stci'd Cattle.—- JSTo transactions,

Sheei'Skins. —We had a very small aupplyfor our sale on Monday last, hut prices were satisfactory. We quote butchers' green skins at 4s 9d to 5s Od ; do merino, 3s 8d to 4s sd, wliich we reckon very full rates,' considering the unsettled stato of tho Home wool market.

Hides still command full prices—say id to 4Ad for good sound wet salted. At auction on Monday we disposed of 50 afc from 10s to 25s eacli.

• Tallow is in easier request, and prices may be quoted at from 20s to 30s per ton lower for ordinary sorts ; prime bright mutton, however, commands about rates quoted last work. By auction and privately we havo sold during tbe week GO casks and 13 packages, as follows : — 36 casks good bright at L 3 3; 24 casks mixed, L3O 10s ; and 13 packages rough fat, L 22 per ton. Grain. — Wheat has been dealt iv to a vory limited extent during tho past week, as arrivals have been quite inconsiderable, and the stock in
